It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, fever is a piece of the Fire, so cool it away from yourselves with water." The narrator said: And when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a fever, he would call for a waterskin of water, pour it over his head and take a bath.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this addition.

Grading: The first part of the hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (sahih due to other reports), but this chain is da'if because Isma'il bin Muslim (who is al-Makki, Abu Ishaq al-Basri) is weak. (1857). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith is in "Juz' Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Ansari" (74), and through his route al-Bazzar recorded it in his "Musnad" (4599), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (6947), al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (117), and al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (1857). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The preceding narration serves as a supporting report (shahid) for the first part.
