It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that whenever Sulayman (peace be upon him), the Prophet of Allah, stood at his place of prayer, he would see a tree growing in front of him. He would ask it: "What is your name?" It would say: "My name is such-and-such." He would ask: "What are you for?" It would say: "For such-and-such a purpose." If it was for medicine, it would be written down, and if it was for planting, it would be planted. One day, while he was praying, he saw a tree growing in front of him. He asked it: "What is your name?" It said: "Al-Kharrub (the carob)." He asked: "What are you for?" It said: "For the ruin of this House (Bayt al-Maqdis)." Sulayman (peace be upon him) supplicated: "O Allah! Conceal my death from the jinn, so that mankind may come to know that the jinn do not know the unseen." The narrator said: He carved a staff from that wood and leaned upon it. Then termites ate it, and he fell. When they estimated how long the termites had been eating it, they found it to be a period of one year. Then it became clear to mankind that if the jinn had known the unseen, they would not have remained for a year in the humiliating punishment (and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to recite it this way). Then the jinn thanked the termites, and they would bring water to them wherever they were.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the wording is: "فسقط فخر وأكلتها الأرضة فوجدوه حولًا", while the printed edition has "فسقط فخر فوجدوه ميتًا حولًا". The text we have adopted is the most suitable for the meaning. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Similar wording is in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (12281) from Ali bin Abd al-Aziz (who is Abu al-Hasan al-Baghawi, the hafiz).
(7616). Grading: It is "sahih mawquf" (sahih as a statement of Ibn Abbas), as explained earlier at number (7616).
