Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8422

Isra'il has narrated this same hadith through Abu Ishaq. Imam al-Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The routes (chains) of this hadith that I have mentioned are fewer than half. I sought out the narrators whom the two Shaykhs (Imam Bukhari and Muslim) agreed to accept as proof in their two Sahihs, yet more than half still remains to be mentioned in this book of mine, so that the student of this knowledge may reflect: should such a hadith, despite its fame and its many narrators, be abandoned merely because only one trustworthy and accepted Tabi'i narrates it from the Companion? Imam Abu al-Hasan Ali bin Umar al-Hafiz (al-Daraqutni) (may Allah have mercy on him) asked me: "Why did the two of them (Imam Bukhari and Muslim) leave out the hadith of Usamah bin Sharik from their books?" I replied: "Because they did not find anyone narrating from Usamah bin Sharik other than Ziyad bin Ilaqah." Then Abu al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) told me the following, and wrote it for me in his own hand: Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded, by way of Yahya bin Hammad, through Abu Awanah, Bayan bin Bishr and Qays bin Abi Hazim, from Mirdas al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) this hadith: "The righteous will depart one after another," although Mirdas has no narrator other than Qays.
Likewise, Imam Bukhari recorded two hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by way of Zuhrah bin Ma'bad from his grandfather Abdullah bin Hisham bin Zuhrah, whereas Abdullah has no narrator other than Zuhrah. Moreover, both of them (Bukhari and Muslim) agreed on recording the hadith of Qays bin Abi Hazim from Adi bin Amirah in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whomever we appoint as an official over some work," although Adi bin Amirah has no narrator other than Qays. Likewise, both of them agreed on the hadith of Majza'ah bin Zahir al-Aslami from his father, in which the meat of domestic donkeys was forbidden, whereas Zahir has no narrator other than Majza'ah.
Imam Bukhari also recorded the hadith of al-Hasan al-Basri from Amr bin Taghlib, whereas Amr has no narrator other than al-Hasan. Yet this hadith of Ziyad bin Ilaqah from Usamah bin Sharik is more authentic, more famous and has more narrators than all of these hadiths. Abu al-Hasan (al-Daraqutni) says: (It is not correct to say that Usamah has only one narrator, because) Ali bin al-Aqmar and Mujahid have also narrated from Usamah bin Sharik. In support of this hadith, hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) are also narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with them).

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is strong (qawi) because of Abdullah bin Raja' (who is Abu Umar al-Ghudani).
Details of the narration: Abu Ishaq (who is Amr bin Abdullah al-Sabi'i) narrates it from Ziyad bin Ilaqah, as stated in Ibn Hajar's
Reference / Source: "Ithaf al-Maharah".

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration is found in similar wording in
Reference / Source: "Sahih al-Bukhari" (6434).

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: See
Reference / Source: "Sahih al-Bukhari" (2501, 2502) and (6632).

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith is only in
Reference / Source: "Sahih Muslim" (1833); al-Bukhari did not record it.

Details of the narration: In al-Mizzi's
Reference / Source: "Tahdhib al-Kamal" 19/ 537 it is stated that those who narrated from him were Raja' bin Haywah, his son Adi bin Adi (about whom it was said that he did not hear from him), al-Urs bin Umayrah and Qays bin Abi Hazim.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It has also been said that the Qays bin Abi Hazim who narrated from him is someone else (a different person).

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This is only in
Reference / Source: "Sahih al-Bukhari" (4173); Muslim did not record it.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: See
Reference / Source: "Sahih al-Bukhari" (923) and (2927).

Details of the narration:
Reference / Source: "Tahdhib al-Kamal" 21/ 552 states: Only al-Hasan al-Basri narrated from Amr bin Taghlib, and no one other than him narrated from him; more than one hadith scholar said this.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Abu Umar Ibn Abd al-Barr said: al-Hasan bin Abi al-Hasan and al-Hakam bin al-A'raj narrated from him!

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts some words have dropped out (are missing) here; they are completed, as in al-Daraqutni's
Reference / Source: "al-Ilzamat" p. 74, as follows: "عن عبد الله بن ثعلبة بن صُعَير: مسح النَّبِيّ ﷺ وجهَه" (from Abdullah bin Tha'labah bin Su'ayr: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped his face), and no one other than al-Zuhri narrated from him. End of quote.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration is in his "Sahih" (4300) and (6356).

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this passage is repeated (occurs twice). It was earlier attributed to al-Bukhari, while Imam Muslim did not record any narration of al-Hasan from Amr bin Taghlib.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the narration of Ali bin al-Aqmar from him, it is in al-Tabarani's
Reference / Source: "al-Kabir" (495), but through Muhammad bin Ubaydullah al-Arzami, and this al-Arzami is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith), so his narration carries no weight.
Details of the narration: As for the narration of Mujahid, it is in Ibn Asakir's
Reference / Source: "Tarikh Dimashq" 43/ 402, and in its chain is Sharik al-Nakha'i, who is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory), and there is also doubt in it whether he is Usamah bin Sharik or Ibn Zayd.
Important point: On this basis, none of the narrators (from him) holds up except Ziyad bin Ilaqah; and Allah the Exalted knows best.
