It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would often ask (the Companions): "Has any of you seen a dream?" So whoever wished would relate his dream. One morning he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Last night two angels came to me. One of them sat at my head and the other at my feet. The one at my feet said to the one at my head: Strike a parable of him and his nation. He said: The parable of him and his nation is like that of travellers who reached the edge of a desert and did not have enough provisions to cross the desert, nor enough to return. While they were in this predicament, a well-dressed and well-groomed man suddenly came to them and said: If I take you to green pastures and full pools with abundant water, will you follow me? They said: Yes. So he took them and brought them to green pastures and brimming pools, and they ate, drank and grew fat. Then that man said to them: Did I not find you in that helpless state, and did I not say to you that if I brought you to green pastures and full pools, would you follow me? They said: Of course (we would). He said: Then listen! Ahead of you are gardens greener than these and pools sweeter than these, so follow me. At this one group said: By Allah, he has spoken the truth, we will certainly follow him; while the other group said: We are content with this and will stay here."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Awf is "Ibn Abi Jamilah", and Abu Raja' is "Imran bin Milhan al-Utaridi".
Note / Clarification: We have not found anyone other than the author (al-Hakim) who narrated it from Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him); however, it is narrated with the same wording from the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which Ahmad recorded in "al-Musnad" (4/2402), and others, with a weak chain.
General principle: As for the long hadith of Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) about the dream, which Ahmad (23/20094) and others narrated, this (particular) story is not in it, and Allah knows best.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The word "murajjil" means: one who combs (grooms) his hair. "Al-hullah al-hibarah": a striped cloak. "Al-riwa'" (with kasrah or fathah on the ra'): abundant sweet water.
