حدَّثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدَّثنا أحمد بن عبد الجبار، حدَّثنا يونس بن بُكَير، قال: حدثني عثمان بن عبد الرحمن، عن الزُّهري، عن عُروة، عن عائشة قالت: سُئِلَ رسول الله ﷺ عن وَرَقةَ، فقالت له خديجة: إنه كان صدَّقكَ ولكنه مات قبل أن تَظهَر، فقال رسولُ الله ﷺ: "أُريتُه في المنام وعليه ثيابٌ بِيضٌ، ولو كان من أهل النار لكان عليه لباسٌ غيرُ ذلك" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about Waraqah bin Nawfal, and Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): He believed in you, but he died before your (open) manifestation of prophethood. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was shown him in a dream wearing white clothes, and had he been one of the people of Hell, he would have been wearing some other garment."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده ضعيف جدًّا، عثمان بن عبد الرحمن - وهو الوقّاصي - متروك الحديث، واتهمه ابن معين مرة بالكذب.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "very weak" (da'if jiddan). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman, who is "al-Waqqasi", is "matruk al-hadith", and Ibn Ma'in once accused him of lying.
وأخرجه الترمذي (2288) عن أبي موسى الأنصاري، عن يونس بن بكير، بهذا الإسناد. وقال: هذا حديث غريب، وعثمان بن عبد الرحمن ليس عند أهل الحديث بالقوي.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2288) narrated it from Abu Musa al-Ansari, from Yunus bin Bukayr, with this same chain. Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: this hadith is "gharib", and Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman is not strong according to the scholars of hadith.
ومما يدلُّ على خطأ الوقّاصي في هذا الحديث أنَّ عبد الرزاق أخرجه في "مصنفه" (9719) عن معمر عن الزهري قال: وسئل رسول الله ﷺ عن ورقة بن نوفل - كما بلغَنا - قال … فذكر نحوه. فالحديث من بلاغات الزهري، ولا تصحُّ.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): What shows al-Waqqasi's error in this hadith is that Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in his "al-Musannaf" (9719) from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about Waraqah bin Nawfal, as has reached us, he said …" and then mentioned something similar. So this hadith is one of the "balaghat of al-Zuhri", and they are not authentic.
ورواه أحمد 40/ (24367) من طريق ابن لهيعة، عن أبي الأسود، عن عروة، عن عائشة. وابن لهيعة سيئ الحفظ صاحب تخاليط.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (40/24367) narrated it via Ibn Lahi'ah, from Abu al-Aswad, from Urwah, from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Grading: Ibn Lahi'ah is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory) and confuses narrations.
