Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8386

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sees me in a dream has truly seen me, for Satan cannot take my likeness." The narrator said that his father said: I narrated this hadith to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said that I had seen him (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream. Then I mentioned Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) and likened him (peace and blessings be upon him) to him. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Indeed, he (Sayyiduna al-Hasan) resembled him (peace and blessings be upon him).
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is strong (qawi). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Asim bin Kulayb and his father are both saduq (truthful), there is no harm in them (la ba'sa bihima).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (14/8508) narrated it from Affan bin Muslim, from Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (12/7168) also narrated it from Muhammad bin Fudayl, from Asim bin Kulayb, in the same way.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (12/7553, 15/9316, 9324, 9488, 16/9966, 10055, 10109), al-Bukhari (110, 6197, 6993), Muslim (2266), Abu Dawud (5023), al-Tirmidhi (2280), Ibn Majah (3901) and Ibn Hibban (6051, 6052) narrated something similar via various routes from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Details of the narration: The wording of the marfu' hadith in the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) is the same as in al-Hakim's narration, except that they do not have "the story of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both)", since it is only in the narration of Kulayb. Therefore (al-Hakim's) statement below, "They did not record it with this wording", is correct and beyond doubt.
