Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8373

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the last age, the dream of a believer will hardly ever be false, and the most truthful of you in dreams will be the one who is most truthful in speech. Dreams are of three kinds: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; a dream in which a person's own self talks to him (his thoughts); and a dream from Satan meant to cause grief. So when one of you sees a dream that he dislikes, he should not relate it to anyone; rather he should get up and pray. And the dream of a believer is one part of the forty-six parts of prophethood." Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: "I like to see a fetter (on the feet) in a dream and I dislike a shackle (around the neck), because the fetter signifies steadfastness in the religion."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Via Abd al-Razzaq it was narrated by Ahmad (13/7642), Muslim (2263) and al-Tirmidhi (2291).
Note / Clarification: So al-Hakim's including it in the Mustadrak is an oversight on his part (since it is in Muslim).
Reference / Source: Muslim (2263), Abu Dawud (5019) and al-Tirmidhi (2270) narrated it via Abd al-Wahhab bin Abd al-Majid al-Thaqafi, from Ayyub, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6040) narrated it via Ibn Uyaynah, from Ayyub, but without the passage "Dreams are of three kinds …".
Reference / Source: Muslim (2263) narrated it via Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayyub and Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, from Muhammad bin Sirin, as "mawquf", without mentioning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration is shadh.
Reference / Source: It was narrated in separate portions by Ahmad (16/10590), al-Bukhari (7017), Muslim (2263), Ibn Majah (3906, 3917), al-Tirmidhi (2280) and al-Nasa'i (7607, 10680) via various routes from Muhammad bin Sirin as "marfu'".
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (10674) narrated something similar to the second and third portions of this hadith via Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah. And his (peace and blessings be upon him) words: "The dream is a part …" were narrated by Ahmad (12/7168, 7183), al-Bukhari (6988), Muslim (2263/8), Ibn Majah (3893) and Ibn Hibban (6044) via various routes from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Kulayb al-Jarmi and Yazid al-Awdi differed in their narrations and said: "one part of seventy (70) parts (of prophethood)", whereas the preserved (mahfuz) narration from Abu Hurayrah is "one part of forty-six (46) parts".
Note / Clarification: Caution: some narrators (mistakenly) inserted (idraj) the saying of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "I like the fetter (qayd) …" etc. into the hadith and made it marfu', whereas the correct view is that it is "mawquf" on Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) (his own saying), as it occurs in this narration of the author (al-Hakim).
