[حدَّثنا أبو النَّضْر الفقيه وأبو الحسن أحمد بن محمد العَنَزي، قالا: حدَّثنا مُعاذ بن نَجْدة القرشي، أخبرنا خَلاد بن يحيى، حدَّثنا بشير بن المُهاجر، حدثني ابن بُرَيدة، عن أبيه، قال: كنا أصحابَ محمدٍ نتحدَّثُ لو أنَّ ماعزًا وهذه المرأةَ لم يَجِيئا في الرابعة، لم يَطلُبْهما رسولُ الله ﷺ] (1).
Ibn Buraydah narrates from his father that he said: We, the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), used to say among ourselves that if Ma'iz and that woman had not come a fourth time (to confess), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not have sought them out.

(1) هذا الخبر لم يرد في نسخنا الخطية، وأثبتناه من "تلخيص الذهبي"، وهو قطعة من حديث بريدة السالف عند المصنف برقم (8277)، ومنه أخذنا أول الإسناد إلى قوله: القرشي.
Note / Clarification: (1) This report was not present in our manuscripts; we have established it from "Talkhis al-Dhahabi". It is a portion of the hadith of Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that passed earlier in the author (al-Hakim)'s work as number (8277), and from there we took the beginning of the isnad up to the word "al-Qurashi".
وهذا إسناد لا بأس برجاله غير بشير بن المهاجر الغنوي، فهو ليِّن الحديث، وقد روى له مسلم الحديث المذكور متابعةً، وأعرض عن قول بريدة هذا.
Grading: There is no harm in the narrators of this isnad (la ba'sa bihim), except Bashir bin al-Muhajir al-Ghanawi, who is weak in hadith (layyin al-hadith). Muslim narrated the aforementioned hadith from him as a "corroboration" (mutaba'ah), but he left out this (particular) statement of Buraydah.
وأخرج قولَ بريدة عقبَ حديثه في قصة رجم ماعز: أحمد 38/ (22942)، والنسائي (7164) من طريق أبي نعيم الفضل بن دكين، عن بشير بن المهاجر، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: This statement of Buraydah, following his hadith on the story of the stoning of Ma'iz, was recorded by Imam Ahmad (38/ 22942) and al-Nasa'i (7164) via Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn, from Bashir bin al-Muhajir, with this same isnad.
ويشهد له قول النبي ﷺ لمن رجم ماعزًا عندما فرَّ من الرجم: "هلا تركتموه"، وسلف برقمي (8280) و (8281). وانظر (8279).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (as a shahid) by the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to those who stoned Ma'iz, when he fled during the stoning: "Why did you not leave him?" This narration passed as numbers (8280) and (8281). Also see (8279).
