Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8361

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sees a fault (in someone) and covers it is like one who has saved a girl buried alive by bringing her out of her grave."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) The text between the brackets was missing from our manuscripts; we have established it from "Sunan al-Nasa'i" and the other sources of the takhrij. Including it is correct, the proof being that the author (al-Hakim) declared the isnad sahih immediately after it. Had this narration been mursal (broken), he would not have called it sahih and would have pointed that out. And Allah knows best.

Grading: (3) Its isnad is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the unknown status of "Kathir, the mawla of Uqbah bin Amir" (whose kunyah is Abu al-Haytham). Ka'b bin Alqamah is alone in narrating from him. Ibn Yunus said: His hadith is ma'lul (defective). Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Mizan": He is not known. We say: although a group narrated from Ka'b bin Alqamah, no declaration of his reliability is reported from anyone other than Ibn Hibban. Moreover, there is disagreement over Ibrahim bin Nashit in both the isnad and the text of this hadith, as will come.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Nasa'i (7242) and Ibn Shahin in "Juz' min Hadithihi" (14) via several routes from Abd Allah bin Wahb, with this same isnad, from Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him).
Details of the narration: Al-Layth bin Sa'd contradicted Ibn Wahb. He narrated it from Ibrahim bin Nashit, from Ka'b, from Abu al-Haytham, from "Dukhayn", the scribe of Uqbah, from Uqbah. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (28/ 17395), Abu Dawud (4892), al-Nasa'i (7243) and al-Ruyani in his "Musnad" (252) via several routes from al-Layth bin Sa'd. He added "Dukhayn" in it — who is Ibn Amir al-Hajri — an Egyptian and thiqah (trustworthy); al-Mizzi gave his biography in "al-Tahdhib" and, following Ibn Yunus, gave his kunyah as "Abu Layla". Technical note / Defect ('illah): They were contradicted by Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi, in Ya'qub al-Fasawi's "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (2/ 503-504), Ibn Hibban (517) and al-Bayhaqi (8/ 331), and by Abd Allah bin Salih, in al-Tabarani (17/ 883); the two of them narrated it from al-Layth, from Ibrahim bin Nashit, "from Ka'b, from Dukhayn Abu al-Haytham, from Uqbah". Thus they made "Dukhayn" and "Abu al-Haytham" one and the same person. Muslim in "al-Kuna" (2/ 880) and Ibn Hibban in "al-Thiqat" (4/ 220) followed this, giving Dukhayn the kunyah "Abu al-Haytham", not "Abu Layla".
Reference / Source: It was likewise recorded by al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (544 - al-Rushd edition) via Yahya bin Ishaq al-Saylahini, from al-Layth, from Ibrahim bin Nashit, from Abu al-Haytham Dukhayn, the mawla of Uqbah, from Uqbah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But he did not mention "Ka'b" between Ibrahim and Abu al-Haytham.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad (17331, 17332, 17447) via Ibn Lahi'ah, from Ka'b bin Alqamah, from "Abu Kathir", the mawla of Uqbah, from Uqbah. Details of the narration: This is like the narration of Ibn Wahb (from Ibrahim bin Nashit), except that here Ibn Lahi'ah named the mawla "Abu Kathir". Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is one of the errors of Ibn Lahi'ah, for he is "sayyi' al-hifz" (poor in memory).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak from Ibrahim bin Nashit, but there was disagreement over him. It was recorded by al-Tayalisi (1098) — and via him al-Bayhaqi (8/ 331) — and Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" (23/ 130); and by al-Bukhari in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (758) from Bishr bin Muhammad. Both al-Tayalisi and Bishr narrate from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Ibrahim bin Nashit, from Ka'b, from Abu al-Haytham, who said: It was said to Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him): We have neighbours who drink wine and do such-and-such. So Uqbah said to him: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say (and he mentioned the hadith). Details of the narration: In al-Bukhari the wording is: "Some people came to Uqbah bin Amir and said: We have neighbours …" (and he mentioned the hadith), and al-Bukhari did not mention that Abu al-Haytham received this hadith directly from Uqbah (i.e. there is no explicit statement of hearing).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Muslim bin Ibrahim, in Abu Dawud (4891), al-Tabarani (17/ 884), al-Quda'i's "Musnad al-Shihab" (489, 491, 492) and al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (6232); by Ibrahim bin Abi al-Abbas, in Ibn al-A'rabi's "al-Mu'jam" (2438) and al-Quda'i (490); and by Muhammad bin Sulayman, in Ibn Shahin's "Juz' min Hadithihi" (13) and al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9204). All three (Muslim bin Ibrahim, Ibrahim bin Abi al-Abbas, Muhammad bin Sulayman) narrate it from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Ibrahim bin Nashit, from Ka'b, from Abu al-Haytham, from Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him).
Details of the narration: Ali bin Hujr contradicted them, in al-Nasa'i (7241): he narrated it from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Ibrahim bin Nashit, from Ka'b bin Alqamah: "That Uqbah bin Amir (said)", mentioning it as mursal (broken), without the intermediary of Abu al-Haytham.
Reference / Source: It was recorded similarly by al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (8705) and Abu al-Shaykh in "al-Tawbikh" (123) via two routes from Wahib bin Abd Allah al-Ma'afiri, from Uqbah bin Amir. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Abu al-Shaykh's narration "Abu Hammad al-Ansari" is joined with Uqbah. Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Tajrid" (2/ 160): He (Abu Hammad) was a Companion, and he has a hadith among the Egyptians, joined with Uqbah bin Amir, via Ibn Lahi'ah. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar cited this hadith for him in "al-Isabah" and said: Abu Hammad is the kunyah of Uqbah bin Amir himself; were it not for the dual form "the two Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)", it could have been that a "waw" had dropped out. We say: Abu Hammad has no narration other than this hadith via Ibn Lahi'ah, and Uqbah's kunyah is indeed "Abu Hammad", as Ibn Hajar said; so it is not unlikely that it was a scribal corruption (tashif) by Ibn Lahi'ah (who is poor in memory) — as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar suggested. And Allah knows best. As for the narration of Wahib from Uqbah, it is apparently broken (munqati'), since there are about 73 years between their dates of death. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: It was recorded similarly by al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (655) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (8/ 430) via Ishaq bin Sa'id bin Arkun al-Jumahi, from Sa'id bin Abd al-Aziz, from Isma'il bin Ubayd Allah, from "someone who narrated to him", from Uqbah bin Amir. Grading: Ishaq is a "matruk" (abandoned) narrator. In "al-Awsat" his name has been corrupted into "Amr". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Also, there is an unnamed (mubham) narrator in this isnad.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari recorded in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/ 165) from Muhammad bin Mirdas, from Umar bin Ali al-Muqaddami: I heard Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Muhajir, from Thabit al-Ta'ifi: I saw Jabir bin Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) come to Uqbah bin Amir and say: The hadith that you mentioned: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever conceals a fault of a believer, Allah will conceal him on the Day of Resurrection." Details of the narration: Here the wording differs, and it does not contain the phrase about "reviving a girl buried alive". Grading: There is no harm in its narrators (la ba'sa bihim) except Thabit al-Ta'ifi; al-Bukhari and Ibn Abi Hatim gave his biography but remained silent about him (gave no criticism or praise), while Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and mentioned two narrators who narrate from him. The hadith of such a narrator can bear being graded hasan. So this wording is more authentic than the wording of the author (al-Hakim)'s narration.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (18935) narrated from Muhammad bin Rashid, from Sulayman bin Musa, from "someone who narrated to him", from a man of the Ansar among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): that he went from al-Madinah to Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), who was then governor of Egypt, to ask him about a hadith which they had both heard together from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He asked him about it, and Uqbah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever conceals his brother in an indecency he saw on him, Allah will conceal him in this world and the Hereafter."
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Abd al-Razzaq (after 18936), and likewise al-Humaydi (388), Ahmad (17391) and al-Ruyani (159) via Sufyan bin Uyaynah; both (Abd al-Razzaq and Sufyan) narrate from Ibn Jurayj, who said: I heard Abu Sa'd narrating to Ata', he said: Abu Ayyub (al-Ansari) (may Allah be pleased with him) travelled to Uqbah bin Amir … and said: Narrate to us what you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which no one who heard it (now) remains. Uqbah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever conceals a believer in this world, Allah will conceal him on the Day of Resurrection." Grading: Its isnad is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the unknown status of Abu Sa'd. It is said that he is "Abu Sa'id", "al-Makki al-A'ma" (the blind Makkan); al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar both declared him majhul (unknown).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (17454) narrated from Muhammad bin Bakr, who said: Ibn Jurayj said: Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) rode to Uqbah bin Amir in Egypt and said: I am going to ask you about a matter of which no one who witnessed it with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remains except me and you: how did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) speak about concealing a believer? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever conceals a fault of a believer in this world, Allah will conceal him on the Day of Resurrection." Grading: Its isnad is mu'dal (severely broken).
Details of the narration: Abd al-Razzaq (18936) contradicted him: he narrated it from Ibn Jurayj, from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, from Abu Ayyub, from Maslamah bin Mukhallad, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever conceals a Muslim, Allah will conceal him in this world and the Hereafter." Thus he made it part of the Musnad (narrations) of Maslamah. Grading: Its isnad is munqati' (broken), because Muhammad bin al-Munkadir did not hear from Abu Ayyub.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (16960), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (19/ 1067) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (3494, 3502), and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6060), via Ibn Awn, from Makhul: Uqbah bin Amir came to Maslamah bin Mukhallad in Egypt, and there was some altercation between him and the doorkeeper; Maslamah heard his voice and admitted him. Uqbah said: I have not come to you on a visit; rather, I have come to you for a need. Do you remember the day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever learns of a bad deed of his brother and conceals it, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will conceal him for it on the Day of Resurrection"? He said: Yes. Uqbah said: It is for this that I came. Details of the narration: In this narration it has been made part of the Musnad of Maslamah bin Mukhallad. Grading: Its isnad is da'if (weak) because of a break; Makhul (al-Shami) met neither Uqbah bin Amir nor Maslamah bin Mukhallad.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Jabir with wording similar to the author (al-Hakim)'s narration, found in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (4992, 8085), Abu al-Shaykh's "al-Tawbikh" (122), Abu al-Qasim bin Bishran's "al-Amali" (215) and al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9207). Grading: But in its isnad is "Abu Ma'shar Najih bin Abd al-Rahman", who is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It has another route as well, which is nothing to rejoice over (i.e. it is very weak), in al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (6148) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (669), and Abu Nu'aym's "al-Hilyah" (5/ 233-234). In it is "Talhah bin Zayd al-Raqqi", who is accused of fabricating hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From Jabir bin Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), from a Companion named "Shihab", found in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (7231) and, from him, Abu Nu'aym's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3742); its wording is: "Whoever conceals a fault of a believer, it is as though he has revived a dead person." Technical note / Defect ('illah): In its isnad is "Abu Sinan al-Madani", whom we do not know (majhul).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From Maslamah bin Mukhallad (may Allah be pleased with him) there is a narration in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (8133), in which it is mentioned that the one who travelled to hear the hadith from Maslamah was Jabir bin Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): In its isnad are Yahya bin Abi al-Hajjaj and his shaykh Abu Sinan Isa bin Sinan al-Qasmali, and both of them are weak in hadith (layyin al-hadith).
General principle: See the two previous hadiths of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
