Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts it is written "Abu al-Qasim", which is a mistake.
Note / Clarification: (1) The text from the words "fi al-'afw" up to here was missing from our manuscripts; it was added in the margin of manuscript (M) and marked there as correct.
Grading: (2) Its isnad is "very weak" (da'if jiddan). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is "Yazid bin Ziyad", who is al-Shami al-Dimashqi, not al-Ashja'i as the author (al-Hakim) mistakenly took him to be here, and on that basis he declared the isnad sahih; for al-Ashja'i is "la ba'sa bihi" (acceptable), but al-Dimashqi is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith), and he is the narrator of this hadith. For this reason al-Bukhari (as in al-Tirmidhi's "al-'Ilal al-Kabir"), al-Tirmidhi in "al-Jami'", al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" and al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" all declared it weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Abu al-Muwajjih" is Muhammad bin Amr al-Fazari, and "Abdan" is Abd Allah bin Uthman al-Marwazi.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi (8/ 238) via Muhammad bin Abd al-Aziz bin Abi Rizmah, from al-Fadl bin Musa, with this same isnad, but there Yazid's nisbah (attribution) is not given.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tirmidhi in "al-Jami'" (1424) and "al-'Ilal al-Kabir" (409); al-Daraqutni (3097); al-Bayhaqi (8/ 238 and 9/ 123); and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad" (3/ 282) and "al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq" (1786), via Muhammad bin Rabi'ah, from Yazid bin Ziyad, with this same isnad. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In these sources Muhammad bin Rabi'ah gave Yazid's nisbah as "al-Dimashqi" or "al-Shami".
Details of the narration: The two of them were contradicted regarding its being marfu' by Abu Yusuf al-Qadi Ya'qub bin Ibrahim in his book "al-Kharaj" (p. 167), and by Waki', in Ibn Abi Shaybah (9/ 569), al-Tirmidhi's "al-Jami'" (after 1424) and "al-'Ilal al-Kabir" (410), and al-Bayhaqi (8/ 238). The two of them narrated it from Yazid bin Ziyad as "mawquf". Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: The narration of Waki' is more authentic.
Grading: Al-Bayhaqi said: The narration of Waki' is closer to being correct, and Allah knows best. Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: in Ibn Abi Shaybah, Waki' gave Yazid the nisbah "al-Basri", while Ibn Asakir pointed out in "Tarikh Dimashq" (65/ 192, 196) that this "al-Basri" is in fact the same "al-Shami al-Dimashqi", who used to reside in Sur (Tyre).
Details of the narration: It was narrated by Rishdin bin Sa'd from Uqayl, from al-Zuhri, as "marfu'". Grading: Rishdin is a da'if (weak) narrator; this was stated by al-Bayhaqi. We have not found this narration with a (complete) isnad.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ibn Majah (2545). Grading: Its isnad is "very weak"; in it is Ibrahim bin al-Fadl, who is "matruk al-hadith". We have mentioned the hadiths on this topic there.
