Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8328

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I have not drunk the nabidh of earthenware jars since a man in a stupor was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: O Messenger of Allah, I did not drink wine; rather, I drank nabidh of raisins and dates in a gourd vessel. So at his (peace and blessings be upon him) order he was prodded with hands and beaten with sandals, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade soaking raisins and dates together and using the gourd vessel (dubba').
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: For its second part, see the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that passed earlier as number (7404).
Note / Clarification: "Al-bahz" means: pushing violently.
Note / Clarification: "Al-dubba'": Ibn al-Athir said in "al-Nihayah": al-dubba' means the gourd (which hardens when dried); its singular is "dubba'ah". They used to steep nabidh in it, so the drink would quickly become strong (intoxicating). The prohibition of steeping nabidh in these vessels was in the early period of Islam and was later abrogated. We say: see our commentary on this in "Musnad Ahmad" 3/ (2020), under the hadith of Abu Jamrah al-Duba'i from Ibn Abbas.
