Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8274

It is narrated from Hasan al-Basri that one of the governors of Kufah called a sorcerer who was performing tricks in front of the people. When the news reached Sayyiduna Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), he came with his sword, which he had hidden in his garments. When he saw him, he killed him with a single blow of the sword. The people scattered from there, and he said: "O people, do not be alarmed; I only intended to strike the sorcerer." The governor seized him and imprisoned him. When this reached Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "Both of them did wrong. It did not befit this governor, being a leader (imam) who is followed, to call a sorcerer to perform tricks before him, and nor was it proper for this one (Jundub) to correct or rebuke his governor with the sword."

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This report is sahih, and all the narrators of this chain are trustworthy (thiqah). Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the scholars differ about the lineage and Companionship of this "Jundab" (who killed the sorcerer). Imam al-Mizzi mentioned the statements of the people of knowledge under his biography in "Tahdhib al-Kamal". Details of the narration: This incident has been narrated through several routes (chains), as al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir stated in his "Tafsir" (1/207).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in abridged form in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/222), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (364), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (1725) and al-Daraqutni (3205), and through his route al-Bayhaqi (8/136), and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1588). This narration is transmitted through the route of Khalid al-Hadhdha', from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi: "A sorcerer used to perform tricks in the presence of al-Walid bin Uqbah; he would take a sword and slaughter himself and do such things, yet no harm would come to him. So Jundab (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the sword, took it and struck off the sorcerer's neck, then recited this verse: ﴿Do you then come to sorcery while you see (it)?﴾" Grading: All the narrators of this narration are trustworthy (thiqah).
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it at length in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3034) through the route of Abdullah bin Buraydah, from his father Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him). Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): It contains the narrator "Kathir bin Yahya bin Kathir, Sahib al-Basri", about whom there is disagreement, and his father is weak.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/222) through the route of Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid al-Nakha'i, Abu Bakr al-Khallal in "Ahkam Ahl al-Milal wa'l-Riddah" (1/468) through the route of Harithah bin Mudarrib, and al-Bayhaqi (8/136) through the route of Abu al-Aswad Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Nawfal (the orphan of Urwah). Details of the narration: The narrations of Imam al-Bukhari and al-Khallal are abridged, while that of al-Bayhaqi is detailed (at length).
