حدثني أبو بكر محمد بن أحمد بن بالَوَيهِ، حدثنا محمد بن أحمد بن النَّضْر، حدثنا معاوية بن عمرو، حدثنا زائدة، عن سفيان، عن أبيه سعيد بن مسروق، عن المسيَّب بن رافع، عن عبد الله بن مسعود قال: ما كان اللهُ تعالى ليَراني أفضِّلُ أُمًّا على جَدٍّ (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: May Allah Almighty never see me giving preference (in inheritance) to a mother over a grandfather.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(1) خبر صحيح، وهذا إسناد رجاله ثقات لكن المسيب بن رافع لم يسمع ابن مسعود فيما قاله الإمام أحمد وأبو حاتم وأبو زرعة الرازيان، لكن تابعه إبراهيم بن يزيد النخعي عن ابن مسعود، وروايته عن ابن مسعود قويّة، فقد روى ابن سعد في "الطبقات" 8/ 390، والترمذي في "العلل الصغير" (1/ 531 - بشرح ابن رجب) من طريق سليمان الأعمش قال: قلت لإبراهيم النخعي: أسنِدْ لي عن عبد الله بن مسعود، فقال إبراهيم: إذا حدّثتُك عن رجل عن عبد الله فهو الذي سمّيتُ، وإذا قلتُ: قال عبد الله، فهو عن غير واحد عن عبد الله.
Grading: The report is sahih; the narrators of this chain are thiqah, but al-Musayyab bin Rafi' did not hear from Ibn Mas'ud, according to what Imam Ahmad, Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah al-Razi said (i.e. it is munqati').
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, al-Musayyab was corroborated by Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Nakha'i from Ibn Mas'ud, and his narration from Ibn Mas'ud is strong.
General principle: Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (8/390) and al-Tirmidhi in "al-'Ilal al-Saghir" (1/531, with Ibn Rajab's commentary) reported through the route of Sulayman al-A'mash, who said: I said to Ibrahim al-Nakha'i: "Give me chains to 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud." Ibrahim said: "When I narrate to you from a man from 'Abd Allah, then it is the one I named; and when I say 'Abd Allah said', then it is from more than one person from 'Abd Allah."
وأخرجه عبد الرزاق (19019)، وابن أبي شيبة 11/ 241، والدارمي (2916)، وابن المنذر في "الأوسط" (6767) من طرق عن سفيان الثوري، بهذا الإسناد. لكن بلفظ: "على أب"، وليس "على جَدّ" كما عند الحاكم.
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq (19019), Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/241), al-Darimi (2916) and Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (6767) recorded it through various routes from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But with the wording "'ala ab" (over a father), not "'ala jadd" (over a grandfather) as in al-Hakim.
وأخرج عبد الرزاق (19068)، وسعيد بن منصور (69)، وابن أبي شيبة 11/ 318، والباغندي في "فرائض سفيان" (26)، والبيهقي 6/ 252 من طريق الأعمش، عن إبراهيم، قال: كان عمر وعبد الله لا يفضّلان أُمًّا على جَدٍّ.
