It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever unjustly spreads a word against a Muslim in order to disgrace him, Allah Almighty will disgrace him with it in the Fire of Hell on the Day of Resurrection."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Clarification: In the manuscripts this word was distorted into "شان"; the correct word is taken from the sources of takhrij, and it is on this that Abu 'Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam based his explanation.
Clarification: In the manuscripts it is "أشانه", whereas what is established here is taken from the sources of takhrij, and that is the correct form.
Grading: Its chain is utterly weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): 1. Abdullah bin Maymun: he could not be identified, and in our view it is unlikely that he is "al-Qaddah", who is matruk (abandoned), because al-Qaddah is from a lower generation, whereas this (narrator) is from a higher generation. 2. Musa bin Miskin: we do not know him. Reference / Source: Imam al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis" about this chain: It is dark (muzlim). Reference / Source: Abu 'Ubayd recorded it in "Gharib al-Hadith" (2/ 559), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Samt" (256) and "Dhamm al-Ghibah" (120), al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (447) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9211), via Abu Mu'awiyah, with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic (these words) are narrated from Abu al-Darda' as mawquf: "Any man who spreads about a Muslim a word of which he is innocent, in order to disgrace him with it, it is a right upon Allah to punish him with it in the Fire on the Day of Resurrection until he brings forth the fulfilment of what he said." Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in "al-Samt" (257) and "Dhamm al-Ghibah" (121), and Abu al-Shaykh in "al-Tawbikh" (132). Technical note / Defect ('illah): In it is Sulayman bin 'Amr bin Thabit, whom we do not know. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And a similar narration is found in al-Tabari's "Sarih al-Sunnah" (38), al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (8936) and Abu al-Shaykh's "al-Tawbikh" (128). Grading: Al-Mundhiri graded its chain jayyid (good) in "al-Targhib", even though there is disagreement over the name of the narrator who narrates it from Abu al-Darda'. Note / Clarification: Abu 'Ubayd said: "أشاد" means: he raised mention of him, made him prominent and made him notorious for something ugly. Likewise, everything that you raise, you have done "ashadta" to it. I think the expression "البنيان المشيد" (the lofty building) is derived from this too. It is said: "أشدت البنيان فهو مُشاد" and "شيّدته فهو مشيَّد", i.e. when you raise it and make it tall.
