Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8089

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit him in his illness, and he began to weep. Sayyiduna Sa'd asked: "O Abu Abdullah, what makes you weep? When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away he was pleased with you; you will meet him at the Pond and you will be reunited with your companions." Sayyiduna Salman said: "I am not weeping out of fear of death or love of the world, but because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took a covenant from us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Let the provision of each of you from the world be only as much as the provision of a traveller,' while around me are all these many things (possessions)." (Yet) all he had around him was a vessel, a large bowl and a water jug. Sayyiduna Sa'd said: "O Abu Abdullah, give us some advice that we may adopt after you." He said: "O Sa'd, remember Allah when you firmly resolve upon a matter, remember Allah when you distribute (wealth), and remember Allah when you judge."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), but the intermediary between Abu Sufyan (Talhah bin Nafi') and the two Companions of the hadith is unnamed (mubham); however, (the hadith) has also come through several other routes.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9910) from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu 'Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam recorded it in "al-Amwal" (16), Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (4/ 84), Ibn Abi Shaybah in "al-Musannaf" (13/ 220) and "al-Musnad" (460), Ahmad in "al-Zuhd" (825), Hannad in "al-Zuhd" (566), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 195-196) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (21/ 451), via Abu Mu'awiyah.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-A'rabi recorded it in "al-Zuhd wa Sifat al-Zahidin" (87), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Shu'ab" (9911) and Ibn 'Asakir (21/ 451) via Za'idah bin Qudamah, and Ibn 'Asakir (21/ 451-452) via Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid; both of them (Za'idah and Jarir) narrate it from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Sa'd (bin Abi Waqqas).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this route there is no unnamed narrator.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym (1/ 195) recorded it via Muhammad bin 'Isa al-Damghani, from Jarir, from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, in which it says: "Sa'd entered" and he mentioned the narration in full; so he added (the narrator) Jabir in it. After it Abu Nu'aym said: Al-Damghani narrated it from Jarir in this way.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: This points to an error (wahm) of al-Damghani, because the narration of Ibn 'Asakir from Jarir himself does not mention Jabir, nor does the narration of Za'idah from al-A'mash.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ahmad (39/ 23711) recorded something similar via al-Hasan al-Basri, and Ibn Hibban (706) via 'Amir bin Abdullah, both from Salman as mursal.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is narrated via both Sa'id bin al-Musayyab and Muwarriq al-'Ijli from Salman. See both routes with their takhrij in "Musnad Ahmad"; we have mentioned its supporting reports there.
Note / Clarification: His words "حولي هذه الأساودة" (around me are these "asawidah"): Ibn al-Athir said: He means the shapes of belongings he had with him, for every figure, whether a person, belongings or anything else, is called "sawad". Or he means snakes by it (asawidah being the plural of aswad); he likened the belongings to snakes because he felt harmed by their presence.
Note / Clarification: The word "الإجّانة" means a vessel (tub) in which clothes are washed.
