Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with them both) that they both bore witness about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the servant says: 'La ilaha illallahu wallahu akbar' (There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest), his Lord affirms him and says: 'My servant has spoken the truth; there is no god but Me, and I am alone.' And when he says: 'La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu' (There is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner), his Lord affirms him and says: 'My servant has spoken the truth; there is no god but Me, and I have no partner.' And when he says: 'La ilaha illallahu lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd' (There is no god but Allah; His is the dominion and His is all praise), Allah says: 'My servant has spoken the truth; there is no god but Me; the dominion is Mine and the praise is Mine.' And when he says: 'La ilaha illallahu wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (There is no god but Allah, and there is no ability (to turn away from sin) and no strength (to do good) except through Allah), Allah says: 'My servant has spoken the truth; the ability (to avoid evil) and the strength (to do good) are only through Me.'"
This is a hadith that has not been recorded in the "Two Sahihs", although both of them used the hadith of Abu Ishaq from al-Agharr from Abu Hurayrah and Abu Sa'id as evidence, and they are agreed on taking the hadiths of Isra'il bin Yunus from Abu Ishaq as proof.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (B) the wording is: "La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu" (there is no god but Allah alone).

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Details of the narration: Abu Ishaq here refers to "'Amr bin Abd Allah bin 'Ubayd al-Sabi'i", and al-Agharr refers to "Abu Muslim al-Madani".
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (851) narrated it by way of Yahya bin Abi Bukayr, from Isra'il, with this same chain. Its wording is: "When the servant says: 'There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest', his Lord affirms him and says: My servant has spoken the truth, there is no god but Me and I am the Greatest; and when he says: 'There is no god but Allah alone', his Lord affirms him and says: My servant has spoken the truth, there is no god but Me, alone; and when he says: 'There is no god but Allah, He has no partner', his Lord affirms him and says: My servant has spoken the truth, there is no god but Me, I have no partner…".
Important point: This wording is more correct than the wording reported by the author.
Reference / Source: It was likewise narrated by Ibn Majah (3794), al-Tirmidhi (3430), and al-Nasa'i (9774) and (10108), through various routes from Abu Ishaq.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is hasan.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi narrated it immediately after it, and al-Nasa'i (9777), by way of Shu'bah from Abu Ishaq as "mawquf".
General principle: Its being mawquf does not harm (its authenticity), because such a statement cannot be said from personal opinion and analogy (so it has the ruling of marfu').

Note / Clarification: Manuscript (B) reads: "a sahih hadith".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is an error (wahm) on the part of the author (Imam al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him), because Imam al-Bukhari did not record any narration of al-Agharr (Abu Muslim) in his "Sahih".
