Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 797

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man used to lead the people in prayer at Quba'. Whenever he wanted to recite a surah, he would first recite 'Say: He is Allah, the One', then add another surah to it, and he did this in every rak'ah. His companions objected, saying that he should either recite only this one or leave it and recite another surah. He said: "I cannot leave it. If you wish, I will lead you in prayer; otherwise I will not." He was the most virtuous of them, so they mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) called him and asked why he did this. He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I love this surah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your love for it has admitted you into Paradise."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is some weakness in this chain because of Ali bin al-Saqr; al-Daraqutni said he is not strong, but he is corroborated. Likewise there is criticism of Abd al-Aziz al-Darawardi's narration from Ubayd Allah bin Umar, but he too has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi narrated it at (2901) through the chain Muhammad bin Isma'il (who is al-Bukhari) from Isma'il bin Abi Uways from Abd al-Aziz bin Muhammad, and called it "a hasan hadith".
Important point: This narration is also with al-Bukhari in his "Sahih" (774 m) as "mu'allaq" (without a complete chain) from Ubayd Allah bin Umar.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it in abridged form at (794) via Mus'ab bin Abd Allah al-Zubayri from al-Darawardi.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ahmad narrated it in 19/(12432), (12433) and (12512), al-Tirmidhi at (2901 m) and Ibn Hibban at (792) via Mubarak bin Fadalah from Thabit al-Bunani.
