Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7898

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Amrah that Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) was informed of a funeral among his people. He came when the people had already taken their seats; when the people saw him, they drew aside (to make room for him), and he sat in a corner. Then he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best gatherings are the most spacious."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The name of the narrator 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi 'Amrah is actually 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Amr bin Abi 'Amrah, as Abu Dawud and Ibn Hibban stated explicitly. According to Imam Ibn 'Abd al-Barr and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar he is 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Abi 'Amrah, who did not meet any Companion.
Important point: Imam al-Mizzi made an error here in taking him to be the "'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi 'Amrah" whose status as a Companion is disputed (and who is his paternal uncle). Ibn Hajar corrected this in "al-Tahdhib": 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Mawal did not narrate from the uncle but from the nephew.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (17/ 11137 and 18/ 11663) and Imam Abu Dawud (4820) through various routes from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Mawali, with this same chain.
