Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7893

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, ask Allah for guidance and steadfastness (sadad); when asking for guidance, keep in mind being guided along the road, and when asking for steadfastness, keep in mind the straightening of an arrow." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave his son, Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), the same command that he had given his father; and the words of the Qunut supplication that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him, 'Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayt' (O Allah, include me among those whom You have guided), are too well known to need mention of their chain and routes.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this chain of it is "hasan" because of 'Asim bin Bahdalah ('Asim bin Abi al-Nujud).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here the narrator "Zirr" refers to Zirr bin Hubaysh.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam al-Bazzar in his Musnad (562), Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (3/ 283) and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad" (4/ 54) through the route of Abu Khalid al-Ahmar Sulayman bin Hayyan, from Shu'bah, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bazzar says: I think that Abu Khalid al-Ahmar made a mistake in its chain, because no one corroborated him in this hadith with this chain; rather this hadith is narrated through the route of "'Asim bin Kulayb, from Abu Burdah, from 'Ali".
Important point: That is what Imam al-Bazzar said, whereas Imam al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-'Ilal" (492) that Musa bin Dawud al-Dabbi corroborated Abu Khalid in this narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): After mentioning the narrations of both Abu Khalid al-Ahmar and Musa al-Dabbi, Imam al-Daraqutni said that both of them fell into error (wahm), and the correct narration from Shu'bah is through the route of "'Asim bin Kulayb, from Abu Burdah, from 'Ali".
Reference / Source: A similar finding is also mentioned in Ibn 'Adi's "al-Kamil" and al-Khatib's "Tarikh Baghdad".
Important point: Imam al-Hakim added a third narrator from Shu'bah (as in his own narration), namely "al-Nadr bin Shumayl". His chain up to Shu'bah is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): These three routes from Shu'bah indicate that he had two chains for this hadith. Since Shu'bah is a hafiz and an imam who narrated abundantly, there is no room for any objection or difficulty in this.
Reference / Source: As for the route of Shu'bah, from 'Asim bin Kulayb, from Abu Burdah, from 'Ali, it was narrated by Imam Ahmad (2/ 1168) and Imam Ibn Hibban (998), and its chain is qawi (strong).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Narrators other than Shu'bah also narrated it from 'Asim; see: Ahmad (1124), Muslim (2725), Abu Dawud (4225) and al-Nasa'i (9469).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (664) narrated it through the route of Khalid bin 'Abd Allah al-Wasiti, from 'Asim bin Kulayb, from Abu Burdah, in which he narrated from 'Ali by way of his father Abu Musa al-Ash'ari.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain "Abu Musa al-Ash'ari" has been added between Abu Burdah and 'Ali, and this is an error (wahm), as Imam al-Daraqutni pointed out in "al-'Ilal".

Reference / Source: It was narrated through the route of Burayd bin Abi Maryam by Imam Ahmad (3/ 1718), Abu Dawud (1425, 1426), Ibn Majah (1178), al-Tirmidhi (464), al-Nasa'i (1446) and Ibn Hibban (722, 945).
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi says that this hadith is hasan; we know it only through this route (of Abu al-Hawra' al-Sa'di, whose name is Rabi'ah bin Shayban).
Important point: He also said that we do not know any narration from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the qunut in witr better than this.
