Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7889

It is narrated from a man that he said: We were with Salim bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) on a journey, and a man sneezed and said: 'As-salamu alaykum' (Peace be upon you). Salim said: "Upon you and upon your mother be peace." Then he asked him: Perhaps this upset you? He said: I would not have liked you to mention my mother. Salim said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man sneezed and said: 'As-salamu alaykum' (Peace be upon you), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Upon you and upon your mother be peace." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Alhamdu lillahi rabbil-alamin' (All praise is for Allah, the Lord of the worlds), or 'Alhamdu lillahi ala kulli hal' (All praise is for Allah in every state); let it be said to him: 'Yarhamukumullah' (May Allah have mercy on you); and let him say: 'Yaghfirullahu li wa lakum' (May Allah forgive me and you)."
Za'idah bin Qudamah corroborated Sufyan al-Thawri in narrating it from Mansur.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The words "'an rajulin akhar" (from another man) in the text require that an unnamed (mubham) person precede it, as is mentioned in the narration of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan from Sufyan al-Thawri (with Ahmad and al-Nasa'i).
Important point: In the narration from Sufyan al-Thawri, there is disagreement about mentioning the intermediary between Hilal bin Yasaf and Salim bin 'Ubayd; some mentioned one person, some two, and some dropped the intermediary altogether, the details of which are found in the annotation of "Musnad Ahmad" (39/ 23853).

Note / Clarification: The text between the brackets (square brackets) was missing from the manuscripts, and we have established (entered) it from Imam al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis".

Note / Clarification: In the original manuscripts the word here was "wa-li-yuqal", which has been corrected and written (as in the text) in the light of "al-Talkhis".

Grading: Its chain is weak because it is mudtarib (inconsistent) and because the intermediary between Hilal bin Yasaf and Salim bin 'Ubayd is unnamed (mubham).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Among the narrators of the chain, Yahya refers to Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, Sufyan to Sufyan al-Thawri, and Mansur to Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (39/ 23853) and Imam al-Nasa'i (9986) through the route of Yahya al-Qattan, from al-Thawri, from Mansur, from Hilal bin Yasaf, in which Hilal narrates from "a man from the family of Khalid bin 'Urfutah", and he from "another man", who said: We were with Salim bin 'Ubayd, and he mentioned it.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (9987) narrated it through the route of Mu'awiyah bin Hisham, from Sufyan al-Thawri, in which the second unnamed person is named as "Khalid bin 'Urfutah".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This Khalid bin 'Urfutah is "majhul" (unknown); Imam Abu Hatim and Imam al-Bazzar declared him unknown.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (9985) narrated it through the route of al-Qasim bin Yazid, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir, from Hilal bin Yasaf.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Nasa'i declared this narration a "mistake" (error) and declared correct the narration in which two unnamed narrators are mentioned (between Hilal and Salim).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam al-Tirmidhi (2740) and Imam al-Nasa'i (9984) through the route of Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir, in which no intermediary between Hilal and Salim is mentioned.
Important point: Imam al-Tirmidhi says that there is disagreement in transmitting this narration from Mansur, since other narrators added a person between Hilal bin Yasaf and Salim.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Abu Dawud (5032) through the route of Ishaq bin Yusuf al-Azraq and by Imam al-Nasa'i (9988) through the route of Yazid bin Harun; both of them transmit it by way of Warqa' bin 'Umar al-Yashkuri, from Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration, the first unnamed person is not mentioned (only Khalid bin 'Urfujah is mentioned).
Note / Clarification: For the details of the remaining disagreements in this narration, study the next two hadiths and "Musnad Ahmad" (39/ 23853).
