It is narrated from Nafi' that a man sneezed in the presence of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: 'Alhamdu lillahi was-salamu ala rasulillah' (All praise is for Allah, and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him). Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I too say that all praise is for Allah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but this is not how we were taught. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us that when one of us sneezes, he should say: 'Alhamdu lillahi ala kulli hal' (All praise is for Allah in every state).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration and is gharib (singular) among the biographies of Nafi's teachers, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is "hasan", on account of the narrator "al-Hadrami". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hadrami refers to "Ibn 'Ajlan, the mawla of the family of al-Jarud". The author (al-Hakim) made an error (wahm) here in writing him as "Ibn Lahiq"; the details of this can be seen in al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (1/ 230). As for this Lahiq bin 'Ajlan, a group narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Important point: Ibn Hibban gave the name of "Abu al-Rabi'" in the chain as "'Ubayd Allah bin Muhammad al-Harithi" in "al-Thiqat" (8/ 407) and declared him "mustaqim al-hadith" (sound in hadith). Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi (2738) narrated it through the route of Humayd bin Mas'adah, from Ziyad bin al-Rabi', from Hadrami the mawla of the family of al-Jarud, with this same chain. Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi says that this hadith is "gharib" and we know it only from the narration of Ziyad bin al-Rabi'.
Note / Clarification: In the original manuscripts the word "qarib" is written here, which has no place or meaning here; therefore, in the light of "al-Talkhis", the correct word (which is recorded in the text) has been established.
