Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7788

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: A boy was born to me, and when I was given the glad tidings of him I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said (jokingly): "I wish that in his place there were a large bowl full of bread and meat for you people." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you have said that, (then remember) that they (children) are a cause of miserliness, cowardice and grief, but they are also the fruit of the hearts and the coolness of the eyes."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: These words, "Ya'qub haddathana", had dropped out (were missing) from our manuscripts, and we have established them with the help of "Ithaf al-Maharah" (276).

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the word here is "qit'ah", whereas we have corrected it from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis", and this agrees with the other sources of takhrij.

Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah; however, Khaythamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Ju'fi used to narrate mursal (irsal), and his hearing (meeting) from al-Ash'ath bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established. Likewise, some other hadith scholars who reported this hadith narrated it in mursal form.
Important point: (Identification of narrators): Muhammad bin Ishaq is "al-Saghani", Abu 'Asim is "al-Dahhak bin Makhlad al-Nabil", and Sufyan is Imam "Sufyan al-Thawri".
Reference / Source: Imam Hannad narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (549) via Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir, and Ibn Bishran in "al-Amali" (310) by way of 'Isa bin Yunus al-Sabi'i. Both of them (Abu Mu'awiyah and 'Isa) report it from Imam al-A'mash, from Khaythamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman, who said: al-Ash'ath bin Qays was given the good news of the birth of a son, and he mentioned the hadith.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 36/ (21840), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (646) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10551) narrated it by way of Mujalid bin Sa'id, via Imam al-Sha'bi, from al-Ash'ath bin Qays.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mujalid bin Sa'id is a "da'if" (weak) narrator. Also, Imam al-Tabarani (647) narrated it by way of Ibn Lahi'ah, from al-Harith bin Yazid al-Hadrami, from 'Ali bin Rabah, from al-Ash'ath, but Ibn Lahi'ah is a narrator who is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory).
Reference / Source: Imam Waki' narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (178) via Abu Janab Yahya bin Abi Hayyah, from al-Qasim bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Mas'udi, as mursal, with similar wording.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Abu Janab has "weakness" (da'f).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A narration with this meaning has already passed from Ya'la bin Munyah (may Allah be pleased with him) under hadith number (4827), and we mentioned all its supporting reports there.
