Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7767

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan (may Allah be pleased with him): "Beware of the milch animal (do not slaughter it); slaughter a young kid for us." So Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) instructed his wife, and she kneaded dough, while Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) cut the meat, cooked it and roasted it.
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is weak because of 'Abd Allah bin 'Isa al-Khazzaz.
Note / Clarification: This hadith is a portion of the same lengthy narration that has already passed at hadith number 5334.
Note / Clarification: The statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), "iyyaka wa-l-labun" (beware of the milch animal), is in fact a warning against slaughtering an animal that gives milk, as the following narration states explicitly, because it suckles its young, and also so that people may benefit from its milk.
