Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7766

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was passing through one of the streets of Madinah when he saw that some young men had tied up a hen as a target and were shooting at it (with arrows or stones). The narrator said: He became angry and asked: Who has done this? At that they all dispersed. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who mutilates a living creature (by making it a target or tormenting it).
This hadith, with these words, is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it in this context.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musnad Ahmad" (5/3133 and 9/5018).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (9/5801), al-Nasa'i (4516) and Ibn Hibban (5617) narrated it via various routes from Shu'bah, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: (Continuation of the preceding chain.)
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (8/4622 and 9/5247) via al-A'mash from al-Minhal bin 'Amr.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (9/5587 and 10/6259), al-Bukhari (5515), Muslim (1958) and al-Nasa'i (4515) narrated it with a similar meaning via Abu Bishr Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah from Sa'id bin Jubayr.
Important point: Its wording is: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed whoever does this (i.e. ties up a living creature and uses it as a target)."
Reference / Source: Ahmad (9/5682) and al-Bukhari (5514) narrated it via Sa'id bin 'Amr bin Sa'id bin al-'As from Ibn 'Umar.
Important point: Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid tying up any animal or other creature to kill it." There is a story attached to this narration.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (9/5661 and 10/5956) narrated it via Abu Salih al-Hanafi from a Companion who is thought to be Ibn 'Umar.
Important point: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever mutilates a living creature and then does not repent, Allah will mutilate him on the Day of Resurrection."
Grading: Its chain has some weakness.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Perhaps the author wanted to distinguish here between the wordings of al-Minhal bin 'Amr and Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah, because the two Sahihs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not include the hadith narrated by al-Minhal bin 'Amr in their chains, unlike Ja'far. However, al-Bukhari mentioned the narration of al-Minhal bin 'Amr as a suspended report (ta'liq) right after hadith number (5515), via Sulayman bin Harb from Shu'bah.
