Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy) except Ibrahim bin Hilal al-Buzanjirdi, for whom neither a declaration of reliability nor a criticism is found, although, according to al-Sam'ani, a group narrated from him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although al-Husayn bin Waqid is a narrator used by Muslim, he narrates some munkar (denounced) reports. He is alone in this narration from 'Ilba' bin Ahmar (who is not mentioned in the author's narration). 'Ilba' is alone in narrating it from 'Ikrimah, as al-Tabarani and al-Bayhaqi mentioned.
General principle: Al-Bayhaqi says that the hadith of Jabir (with seven) is more authentic, and it is in Sahih Muslim. Abu Ja'far al-Tabari says that there is consensus (established proof) that a cow and a camel do not suffice for more than seven; therefore the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (with ten) is either a mistake and error or abrogated. Al-Tahawi also preferred the narration of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We have not found this narration via 'Ali bin al-Hasan bin Shaqiq with anyone other than the author.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/2484), Ibn Majah (3131), al-Tirmidhi (905, 1501), al-Nasa'i (4109, 4466) and Ibn Hibban (4007) narrated it via al-Fadl bin Musa al-Sinani, from al-Husayn bin Waqid, from 'Ilba' bin Ahmar, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas.
Details of the narration: Ibn Hibban's narration has, with doubt, the words "for a camel, seven or ten".
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi says that this hadith is "hasan gharib" and that we know it only from the narration of al-Fadl bin Musa.
Reference / Source: Ibn Qudamah writes in "al-Mughni" (13/363): "A camel suffices for seven, and likewise a cow. This is the view of most scholars."
General principle: This position is narrated from 'Ali, Ibn 'Umar, Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn 'Abbas and 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with them), and it was held by 'Ata', Tawus, Salim, al-Hasan al-Basri, 'Amr bin Dinar, Sufyan al-Thawri, al-Awza'i, al-Shafi'i, Abu Thawr and the Hanafis (Ashab al-Ra'y).
Important point: Another group accepted the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (with ten) as authentic. Al-Tirmidhi declared it hasan, while Ibn Khuzaymah (2908) declared it sahih and argued for it with the hadith of Rafi' bin Khadij in which, when distributing the spoils, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made ten goats equal to one camel.
Grading: Ibn Hibban (4007), the author and Ibn Hazm in "al-Muhalla" (7/152) declared it sahih.
General principle: This narration of Rafi' bin Khadij is in al-Bukhari (2488) and Muslim (1968) in the story of Hunayn. This position was adopted by Ishaq bin Rahawayh and Sa'id bin al-Musayyab.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there is also a narration from al-Miswar bin Makhramah and Marwan bin al-Hakam in "Musnad Ahmad" (31/18910), where its full takhrij can be seen.
