Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7743

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd al-Zuraqi (may Allah be pleased with him) (who was a Companion) that he went out to buy sacrificial animals. He pointed to a ram whose head was black and which had horns, and which was not the tallest of the rams, and said: This looks exactly like the ram that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed.
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and all its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy) except Hisham bin 'Ammar, who is "jayyid al-hadith" (good in hadith).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hisham bin 'Ammar has been corroborated, except in his saying "from his father"; he erred in that, because Maysarah bin Halbas, the father of Yunus, is not known among the narrators.
Important point: This hadith is in fact preserved (mahfuz) as a narration of Yunus bin Maysarah from his Companion al-Zuraqi. There is disagreement about the name of this Companion: some said Sa'd bin 'Umarah, some 'Umarah bin Sa'd and some 'Amir bin Mas'ud. Likewise there is disagreement about his kunyah, whether it is Abu Sa'id or Abu Sa'd, as al-Mizzi mentioned.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (22/774) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (312) via 'Ali bin Bahr, and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (26/110) via Abd al-Rahman bin Ibrahim.
Details of the narration: Both of these narrators narrate it from al-Walid bin Muslim with this same chain, and their narration does not mention the father of Yunus.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah narrated it (3129) via Muhammad bin Shu'ayb from Sa'id bin Abd al-'Aziz.
Details of the narration: This narration also does not mention the father of Yunus. Its further takhrij can be seen there.
Note / Clarification: Ibn al-Athir says that "al-adgham" is an animal with slight blackness on its body, especially on the tip of the nose and under the chin.
