Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7706

It is narrated from Amrah that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) fell ill, and some of her nephews mentioned her illness to a man from the Zutt (who practised medicine). He said to them: "You are speaking of a bewitched woman, whom a slave-girl of hers, in whose lap there is a child, has bewitched. At this moment there is a child in that slave-girl's lap who has urinated on her clothes." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Bring that slave-girl to me." When she was brought, Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "Did you bewitch me?" She said: "Yes." She asked: "Why?" She said: "I wanted to be freed" (for Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had willed that she be freed after her death). Then Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "By Allah, now you will never be freed." Then she said to her nephews: "See which household is the worst in the way it treats those it owns, and sell her to them; then buy a slave with her price and free him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is corrupted into "al-barat".

Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have "fa-qala", whereas the correct word is what we have recorded in the text.

Note / Clarification: Only manuscript (Z) has the words "saharatni", and both wordings are permissible.

Note / Clarification: This is how it is in the manuscripts, with the "nun" retained, whereas the usual and correct form is to omit it.
