Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7699

It is narrated from Shaqiq that a man suffered from yellow bile (safar) in his stomach, and an intoxicating drink (al-sakar) was prescribed for him. When this was mentioned to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has not placed your cure in what He has made unlawful for you."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This report is "sahih", and all the narrators of this chain are thiqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although al-A'mash did not state explicitly that he heard from Shaqiq (Ibn Salamah), he is corroborated (which removes the concern of tadlis).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Abd al-Razzaq (17098), Ahmad (al-Ashribah 117) and al-Bayhaqi (10/ 5) through various routes from al-A'mash.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In al-Bayhaqi's narration "Habib bin Hassan" is added between al-A'mash and Shaqiq, and he is a weak narrator.
Reference / Source: It was recorded through the routes of Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir and Asim bin Bahdalah, from Shaqiq bin Salamah, by Abd al-Razzaq, Ibn Abi Shaybah, Ahmad, al-Tabarani, Ibn Abd al-Barr and al-Tahawi in their books.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abi Shaybah (8/ 130) via Masruq, from Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari mentioned it in his "Sahih" without a chain (mu'allaq) before hadith no. (5614).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a marfu' narration from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Ibn Hibban (1391), but its chain has some weakness (lin).
Reference / Source: In Sahih Muslim (1984) it is narrated that Tariq bin Suwayd asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about wine, and he forbade him (to make it). He (Tariq) said: "I only make it as a medicine." He said: "It is not a medicine; rather, it is a disease (da')."
Note / Clarification: See the author's no. (8465). "Al-safar" (with fathahs) refers to the accumulation of water in the abdomen (dropsy), or the worms that occur in the liver and the rib cartilages. (al-Nihayah by Ibn al-Athir)
