Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7694

It is narrated from Umm Najiyah that she said: I went in to Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), to perform ruqyah for a redness that had appeared on her face, and she was wearing an amulet. I had just sat down when Abdullah entered the house. When his eyes fell on the amulet, he went to a piece of wood in the house, placed his cloak on it, rolled up his sleeves, and pulled the amulet and broke it, so that Zaynab's face bent towards the ground. Then he went out of the house and said: "The family of Abdullah has become free of any need for shirk." Then he threw it behind the wall and said: "O Zaynab, do you hang this in my presence?! I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid ruqyahs, amulets and tiwalah." Umm Najiyah asked: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, as for ruqyahs and amulets, we know them; what is tiwalah?" He said: "Tiwalah is the magic or thing by which women stir up men (to win their love)."
