It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm al-Mundhir al-Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was one of the maternal aunts of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, and with him was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who had just recovered from an illness (and was still weak). A bunch of dates was hanging in the house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and began to eat from it, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) also began to eat, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop, this does not suit you, for you are still weak." Then I got up and prepared (a dish of) barley and chard, and presented it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, eat from this, it is more beneficial for you."

Explanation & Benefits

Important point: The part from the words "wa ma'ahu Aliyyun naqihun" up to here has dropped out of manuscript (Z).
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Fulayh bin Sulayman is a weak narrator, and disagreement has been reported from him in its chain, as will become clear here and in the next hadith. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it in the "Musnad" 44 / (27051-27053), Abu Dawud (3856), Ibn Majah (3442) and al-Tirmidhi after (2037), through various routes from Fulayh bin Sulayman, with this same chain. Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib" and said (before that) that we know it only from the hadith of Fulayh. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Mizzi, in "Tuhfat al-Ashraf" 13/ 108, commented on this, saying that it has also come by way of Ibn Abi Fudayk, from Muhammad bin Abi Yahya al-Aslami, from his father, from Ya'qub bin Abi Ya'qub. When Abu Hatim al-Razi was asked about it, as in "al-Ilal" (2311), he made clear that Muhammad bin Abi Yahya here is "Muhammad bin Fulayh", and that this hadith is well known from the narration of Fulayh; "I used to think he was Muhammad bin Abi Yahya al-Aslami, the father of Ibrahim bin Abi Yahya … until I came across it: he is Fulayh, and his kunyah is Abu Yahya." Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi recorded it (2037) by way of Yunus bin Muhammad, from Fulayh, from Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman al-Taymi, from Ya'qub bin Abi Ya'qub. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here the narrator mentioned the name "Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman" in place of Ayyub bin Abd al-Rahman (which is an error). This narration will come with the author (al-Hakim) under number (8448), where the words "Fulayh from Ayyub bin Abd al-Rahman" are correctly mentioned. Note / Clarification: "Al-naqih" is a patient who has only just recovered from illness and whose full health has not yet returned (still weak). Note / Clarification: "Al-silq" (chard/beet greens): a kind of vegetable (greens).
