It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) put on a new shirt, then said: O my son, pull my sleeve, and put your hand against the tips of my fingers, then cut off whatever extends beyond that. He said: So I cut off (the excess) from both sleeves, and the ends of the sleeves became uneven. I said: Shall I even it with scissors? He said: O my son, leave it; this is how I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do it. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: That shirt remained with my father until it wore out, and when we prayed, I would see some of its threads falling onto his feet.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The manuscripts have (the word) "fi"; what is established is from "Talkhis al-Dhahabi".
Grading: (2) Its chain is weak because of Yahya bin al-Mutawakkil (who is al-Umari). Al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" and Ibn Kathir in "Musnad al-Faruq" (165) criticised it for this reason. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Salamah bin Ubayd Allah was mentioned by al-Bukhari in "al-Kuna" (p. 40), who gave his name as "Abu Salamah bin Abd Allah bin Ubayd Allah bin Umar". In Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (9/ 383) it is "Abu Salamah bin Abd Allah bin Abd Allah bin Umar", and some said "Abu Salamah bin Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah bin Umar". Neither of them (al-Bukhari and Ibn Abi Hatim) mentioned any criticism or commendation of him. Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 45) through the route of al-Miqdam bin Dawud, from Asad bin Musa, with this chain. (7598). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hannad recorded in "al-Zuhd" (657) through the route of Mutarrih bin Yazid, from Ubayd Allah bin Zahr, from al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah, that: "Once Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting among his companions when a shirt of coarse cotton (karabis) was brought to him", and in it: "Then Umar pulled out the sleeve of the shirt and saw that it extended beyond his fingers. He said to Abd Allah bin Umar: My son, bring the blade or the knife. He brought it, and he pulled the sleeve of the shirt over his hand and cut off what extended beyond his fingers." Grading: Its chain is weak; Mutarrih bin Yazid is weak, and so is his shaykh Ubayd Allah bin Zahr. Also, Mutarrih dropped "Ali al-Alhani" from between Ibn Zahr and al-Qasim, and he too is weak, as was explained under the previous hadith number (7598).
