Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the prayer while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading us in prayer. When he reached the row he said: "O Allah, grant me the best of what You grant Your righteous servants." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prayer, he asked: "Who was the one who spoke just now?" The man said: "It was I, O Messenger of Allah." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then your horse will be slain and you will be martyred in the path of Allah."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This narration is "hasan li-ghayrihi", though here the name of Suhayl's shaykh, Muhammad bin Muslim bin A'idh, has dropped out of the chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This name will come correctly with the author (al-Hakim) later under number (2433), by way of Qutaybah bin Sa'id from al-Darawardi, and it is likewise mentioned by everyone who recorded this hadith. Although only Suhayl bin Abi Salih narrated from Muhammad bin Muslim and Abu Hatim considered him majhul, al-Ijli declared him thiqah, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and he (Ibn Hibban), Ibn Khuzaymah and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi graded his hadith sahih. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: There are also supporting reports for this hadith. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (9841) recorded it through Muhammad bin Nasr, from Ibrahim bin Hamzah, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (4640) recorded it by way of Ahmad bin Abdah al-Dabbi, through al-Darawardi (Abd al-Aziz bin Muhammad). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for it is the narration of Abd Allah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) (Musnad Ahmad 11/6792), whose wording is: "O Messenger of Allah, which jihad is best?" He said: "(That of) one whose horse is hamstrung and whose blood is shed." Grading: Its chain is sahih. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Similarly, the narration of Jabir bin Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) is with Ahmad 22/(14210) and Ibn Hibban (4639), and its chain is also sahih. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar narration of Abd Allah bin Hubshi (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported with Abu Dawud (1449) and al-Nasa'i (2317), and its chain is strong (qawi).
