It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not ride on urjuwan (a deep-red saddle cover), nor do I wear clothing dyed with safflower, nor do I wear a shirt hemmed with silk." And (the narrator) al-Hasan pointed to the collar of his shirt. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Behold! The perfume of men is that which has a scent but no colour, and the perfume of women is that which has a colour but no scent."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. For our shaykhs have differed over whether Hasan al-Basri heard from Imran bin Husayn, but most of them hold that he did hear from him.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) It is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan due to supporting evidence), except for his saying: "And I do not wear a shirt hemmed with silk", for what contradicts it has been authentically established. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators of this chain are trustworthy, but there is disagreement over whether al-Hasan (al-Basri) heard from Imran bin Husayn, and the majority hold that he did not hear from him. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (33/ 19975) and Abu Dawud (4048) through the route of Rawh bin Ubadah, with this chain. Reference / Source: It was recorded in similar, abridged form by al-Tirmidhi (2788) through the route of Abu Bakr al-Hanafi Abd al-Kabir bin Abd al-Majid, from Sa'id bin Abi Arubah, with this chain, and he said: This hadith is hasan gharib by this route. (19975). Note / Clarification: We have discussed it and its supporting reports fully in "Musnad Ahmad" (19975). Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for what contradicts (the prohibition of) wearing a shirt hemmed with silk, it is what Muslim (2069) (10) narrated through the route of Abd Allah, the freed slave of Asma' bint Abi Bakr, who said: Asma' brought out a Khusrawani cloak of the tayalisah kind, with a collar band of brocade (dibaj) and both of its slits hemmed with brocade, and in it: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wear it", to the end of the hadith. Note / Clarification: His saying: "I do not ride on urjuwan" means: I do not ride on a "mithrah of urjuwan" (a red saddle cushion), as it has come in some narrations. "Al-mithrah" (with kasrah on the mim and fathah on the ya') is the pad placed under the saddle of a horse or the saddle of a camel. "Al-urjuwan" (with dammah on the hamzah and the jim and sukun on the ra') is a tree with red blossoms used for dyeing, and likewise anything resembling that colour is called urjuwan.
