Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7585

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: One day I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wearing two garments dyed with safflower. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "What are these two garments?" He said: Umm Abdullah (his wife) dyed them for me. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I adjure you to go back to Umm Abdullah and tell her to fire up the oven and throw these two garments into it." So I went back to her and did so.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. And the two Shaykhs agree that it is forbidden for men to wear garments dyed with safflower, as in the hadith of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me, and I do not say that he forbade you (in general).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) This has dropped out of the manuscripts.

Grading: (2) The hadith is sahih, and this hadith has two chains.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators of the first chain are trustworthy, and it is sahih if it is established that Sa'id bin Hilal heard from Ata' bin Abi Rabah, since no narration of his from Ata' is known. The second chain, which is Sa'id bin Abi Hilal from Amr bin Shu'ayb, is hasan. Khalid bin Yazid is "al-Jumahi al-Misri".
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" (16/ 122-123) through the route of Yahya bin Abd Allah bin Bukayr, from al-Layth bin Sa'd, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (11/ 6852), Abu Dawud (4066) and Ibn Majah (3603) recorded through the route of Hisham bin al-Ghaz, from Amr bin Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather Abd Allah bin Amr, and in it: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards me while I was wearing a sheet (raytah) dyed (red) with safflower, and he said: "What is this sheet on you?" I understood what he disliked, so I went to my family while they were heating their oven and threw it into it. Then I came to him the next day and he said: "O Abd Allah, what did you do with the sheet?" I told him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not give it to one of the women of your household to wear, for there is no harm in it for women?"
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Dawud (4068) recorded through the route of Shuf'ah al-Sam'i, from Abd Allah bin Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me wearing a garment dyed rose-red with safflower, and he said: "What is this?" So I went and burned it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What did you do with your garment?" I said: I burned it. He said: "Why did you not give it to one of your family to wear?" (Note that) Shuf'ah al-Sam'i is majhul (unknown).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) The author (al-Hakim) made an oversight in attributing this hadith to the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim), whereas it is one of the hadiths narrated by Muslim alone (afrad Muslim), and it is in his "Sahih" under number (2078) (29-31).
