أخبرنا أبو جعفر محمد بن محمد البغدادي، حَدَّثَنَا يحيى بن أيوب العلَّاف بمصر، حَدَّثَنَا سعيد بن أبي مريم، أخبرنا يحيى بن أيوب، حدثني موسى بن جبير، أنَّ عباس بن عبد الله بن عباس بن عبد المطّلب حدّثه عن خالد بن يزيد بن معاوية، عن دِحْية بن خَليفة الكَلْبي: أَنَّ رسول الله ﷺ حين بَعَثَه إلى هِرَقْل، فلما رجع أعطاه رسولُ الله ﷺ قُبْطيةً، فقال: "اجعَلْ صَدِيعَها قميصًا، وأَعطِ صاحبتَكَ صَدِيعًا تَختمِرُ (2) به"، فلمَّا وَلَّى قال: "مُرْها تَجعَلْ تحتَها شيئًا لئلّا يَصِفَ" (3).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Dihyah bin Khalifah al-Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to Heraclius and he returned, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him a qubtiyyah (a fine Egyptian cloth) and said: "Make a shirt from one piece of it, and give the other piece to your wife so that she may make it her head-covering (khimar)." When he turned away, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell her to put something else beneath it so that her body does not show through."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this word is distorted into "yahtamunahu"; the correct word is taken from "al-Talkhis" and from the works of those who recorded it.
(3) إسناده ضعيف، عباس بن عبد الله بن عباس - ويقال: عباس بن عبيد الله بن عباس، وهو الأكثر كما قال البخاري في ""التاريخ الكبير" 7/ 3 - قال ابن القطان الفاسي: لا يعرف حاله، وقال الذهبي في "تهذيب كبرى البيهقي": مجهول. وخالد بن يزيد روايته عن دحية منقطعة كما قال الذهبي في "التلخيص".
Grading: (3) Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Concerning Abbas bin Abd Allah bin Abbas (who is also called Abbas bin Ubayd Allah bin Abbas, and that is the more common form, as al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (7/ 3)), Ibn al-Qattan al-Fasi said: "His condition is not known", and al-Dhahabi called him "majhul" (unknown) in "Tahdhib Kubra al-Bayhaqi". Also, Khalid bin Yazid's narration from Dihyah is "munqati'" (disconnected), as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis".
وأخرجه البيهقي في "السنن الكبرى" 2/ 23 والخطيب في "تلخيص المتشابه" ص 519 من طريق محمد بن إسحاق الصغاني، عن سعيد بن أبي مريم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (2/ 23) and al-Khatib in "Talkhis al-Mutashabih" (p. 519) through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Saghani, from Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, with this chain.
وأخرجه أبو داود (4116)، والطبراني في "الكبير" (4199)، وأبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (2577) من طريق ابن لهيعة، عن موسى بن جبير، عن عبيد الله بن عباس، به فسماه عبيدَ الله بن عباس!
Reference / Source: It was also recorded by Abu Dawud (4116), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (4199) and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2577) through the route of Ibn Lahi'ah, from Musa bin Jubayr, from Ubayd Allah bin Abbas; so there he named him "Ubayd Allah bin Abbas".
وأخرج أحمد 36/ (21786) من طريق عبد الله بن محمد بن عَقيل، عن محمد بن أسامة بن زيد عن أسامة قال: كساني رسول الله ﷺ قبطية كثيفة كانت مما أهداها دحيةُ الكلبي، فكسوتها امرأتي، فقال لي رسول الله ﷺ: "ما لَك لم تَلبَس القبطية؟ " قلت: يا رسول الله، كسوتُها امرأتي، فقال لي رسول الله ﷺ: "مرها فلتجعل تحتها غِلالةً، إني أخاف أن تَصِفَ حجمَ عظامها". وإسناده محتمل للتحسين.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Ahmad (36/ 21786) recorded through the route of Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, from Muhammad bin Usamah bin Zayd, from Usamah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a thick Qibti garment which Dihyah al-Kalbi had given him as a gift, and I gave it to my wife to wear. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Why is it that you do not wear the Qibti garment?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, I gave it to my wife to wear. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Tell her to wear a ghilalah (undergarment) beneath it, for I fear that it will describe the size of her bones (i.e. show the shape of her body)."
Grading: Its chain is capable of being graded hasan.
قوله: "قُبطية" بالضم: ثوب رقيق أبيض يصنع في مصر
