Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7567

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and saw a man whose hair was dishevelled, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Could this man not find something with which to tidy his hair?!" And he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw another man whose clothes were dirty and said: "Could this man not find something with which to clean his clothes?"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (2) Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (23/ 14850), Abu Dawud (4062), al-Nasa'i (9261) and Ibn Hibban (5483) through various routes from al-Awza'i, with this chain. Al-Nasa'i's narration is abridged, containing its first part.
Reference / Source: Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari narrated from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, from Abu Qatadah, that: "He had a large mass of hair (jummah), so he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he ordered him to look after it and to comb it every day." It was recorded by al-Nasa'i (9262), who said: "This seems closer to being correct."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: al-Nasa'i preferred this mursal narration (since Ibn al-Munkadir's narration from Abu Qatadah is mursal) because both hadiths revolve around Muhammad bin al-Munkadir; but the apparent meaning of the two hadiths is that they are two different incidents. And Allah Most High knows best.
Details of the narration: On this topic there is a report from Ata' bin Yasar, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the mosque when a man came in with the hair of his head and beard dishevelled. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him with his hand to go out, as if he meant that he should tidy the hair of his head and beard. The man did so and came back, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is this not better than that one of you should come with dishevelled hair as though he were a devil?"
Reference / Source: Imam Malik (2/ 949) recorded it thus, as mursal, and its narrators are trustworthy.
