Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7561

It is narrated from Abu Sallam al-Aswad that it reached Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) that he narrated the hadith about the Pond (al-Kawthar) via Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him). So he sent for him, and he was brought on the post horses (al-barid). When he arrived and entered, he greeted with salam and said: "O Commander of the Believers, riding the post mount has been very hard on my legs." Umar bin Abd al-Aziz said with sympathy: "O Abu Sallam, we did not intend to cause you hardship, but a hadith reached me which you narrate via Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the Pond (al-Kawthar), and I wanted to hear it from your own lips, face to face." Abu Sallam said: I heard Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Pond is as wide as (the distance) from Aden to Amman al-Balqa'. Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey, and its cups are as numerous as the stars. Whoever drinks a single draught from it will never feel thirst afterward. The first to arrive at it will be the poor among the Muhajirun, with dishevelled hair and soiled clothes, those who cannot marry women of comfort and luxury, and for whom (the great people's) doors are not opened." (On hearing this,) Umar bin Abd al-Aziz said: "But I have married a woman of comfort and luxury, Fatimah bint Abd al-Malik, and doors are opened for me. Now I will not wash my head until it becomes dishevelled, nor (will I wash) the garment that touches my body until it becomes dirty."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) This addition is taken from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis".

Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih except for the phrase "أول الناس ورودًا … إلخ" (the first people to arrive, etc.). And this chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-'Abbas bin Salim al-Lakhmi did not hear from Abu Sallam al-Aswad (whose name is Mamtur), as appears in the narration of Ibn Majah; likewise Abu Sallam did not hear from Thawban, as a group of the imams said. The chains in which his hearing from Thawban is explicitly stated are either broken (munqati') or weak. Muhammad bin al-Muhajir is "al-Ansari al-Shami".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (37/ 22367) recorded it via Isma'il bin 'Ayyash, Ibn Majah (4303) via Marwan bin Muhammad, and al-Tirmidhi (2444) via Yahya bin Salih; all three of them narrate it from Muhammad bin al-Muhajir, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, in Ibn Majah's version the words are: "Al-'Abbas bin Salim said: I was informed (nubbi'tu) from Abu Sallam". Al-Tirmidhi said: this hadith is gharib from this route, and this hadith has also been narrated via Ma'dan bin Abi Talhah, from Thawban, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (22409, 22426, 22430, 22447, 22448), Muslim (2301) and Ibn Hibban (6455, 6456) recorded it via Ma'dan bin Abi Talhah, from Thawban, as marfu', with the wording: "I will be at the rear of my Cistern, driving people back from it for the people of Yemen; I will strike with my staff until (the water) flows over them." He was asked about its breadth and said: "From where I stand to 'Amman." He was asked about its drink and said: "Whiter than milk and sweeter than honey; two spouts pour into it, feeding it from Paradise: one of gold and the other of silver."
Note / Clarification: "السُّدَد" (with dammah then fathah): it means doors (gates).
