It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a man to whom beauty is dear, and I have been given of it what you see, to the extent that I do not like anyone to surpass me even in the strap or the thong of my sandals. Is this arrogance?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No; rather, arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: (1) This hadith is sahih, but this chain is da'if (weak) because of Abu Bahr al-Bakrawi, though he has been corroborated. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4092) and Ibn Hibban (5467) recorded it via Abd al-Wahhab bin Abd al-Majid al-Thaqafi, from Hisham bin Hassan, with this chain. Note / Clarification: "شِراك النعل" (the sandal strap): the strap that lies over the top of the foot; and "الشِّسع": the strap that holds the sandal to the toes. Note / Clarification: "بَطِرَ الحقَّ": he rejected the truth. Note / Clarification: "غَمِصَ فلان فلانًا": he despised so-and-so, belittled him and regarded him as nothing.
