Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 752

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is between the east and the west (the whole of that direction) is the qiblah."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, because Shu'ayb bin Ayyub is trustworthy (thiqah) and he narrated it with a connected chain.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is sahih as "mawquf" (a statement of a Companion).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in the narrators of this chain, but some narrators erred in narrating it as marfu', whereas what is preserved from Ubayd Allah bin Umar is that it is mawquf.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in 2/9 through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The well-known version is that a group of thiqah narrators (Hammad bin Salamah, Za'idah bin Qudamah, Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan and others) narrated it from Ubayd Allah bin Umar, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), as his own statement (mawquf).
Important point: Abu Zur'ah al-Razi ("Ilal Ibn Abi Hatim" 528) and al-Daraqutni ("al-Ilal" 2/32) also held that classifying it as mawquf is correct.
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni recorded it as marfu' in his "Sunan" (1060) through Abu Yusuf Ya'qub bin Yusuf.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (3633), Ibn Abi Shaybah 2/361, al-Baghawi in "al-Ja'diyyat" (2405), al-Fakihi in "Akhbar Makkah" (291) and al-Bayhaqi 2/9 recorded it as a statement of Umar (mawquf) by five different routes with the chain of Ubayd Allah bin Umar, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, from Umar.
Reference / Source: Likewise, Abd al-Razzaq (3636) recorded it by way of Ayyub, and al-Bayhaqi 2/9 by way of Nafi' bin Abi Nu'aym; both of them from Nafi' the mawla of Ibn Umar, from Ibn Umar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ayyub made it mawquf on Ibn Umar, whereas Nafi' bin Abi Nu'aym made it mawquf on Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Malik recorded it in "al-Muwatta'" 1/196 through Nafi'.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with Ibn Majah (1011) and al-Tirmidhi (342-344), and it is a "hasan" hadith.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The author's (al-Hakim's) calling him thiqah is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part; the fact is that only his father, Abd al-Rahman bin Mujabbar, is thiqah. As for Muhammad (bin Abd al-Rahman), he is "matruk" (abandoned). Al-Nasa'i called him matruk, al-Bukhari said "sakatu anhu" (they remained silent about him), Ibn Ma'in said "laysa bi-shay'" (he is nothing), and Abu Zur'ah declared him "wahin" (weak). Ibn Adi and al-Fallas also graded him weak.
