Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih li-ghayrihi,
Technical note / Defect ('illah): while this chain is da'if (weak), because Ja'far bin Yahya (who is Ibn Thawban al-Hijazi) and his shaykh 'Umarah bin Thawban are both majhul (unknown).
Note / Clarification: Abu 'Asim is al-Dahhak bin Makhlad al-Nabil.
Reference / Source: It was narrated in similar form by Ibn Majah (1977) and Ibn Hibban (4186) via various routes from Abu 'Asim al-Nabil, with this same chain. In Ibn Hibban's narration the occasion of the hadith is also mentioned.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) found in al-Tirmidhi (3895) and Ibn Hibban (4177). Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), but there is disagreement over whether it is mawsul (connected) or mursal.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) (supports it), found in Musnad Ahmad 12/ (7402), and its chain is hasan.
