Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7478

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful to cut off relations (with one's brother) for more than three days. If the two meet and one of them greets the other with salam and the other returns the greeting, they share in the reward. If the other refuses to return the greeting, then this one (who greeted) is free of the sin, and the other returns bearing (the burden of) it." The narrator says: I think he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "And if they both die while they are not on speaking terms with each other, they will not be together in Paradise."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name is written "Sharahil", while what we have established (in the text) is taken from "Ithaf al-Maharah" (7725).

Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi", but this chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We did not find any narrator named Shurahbil bin Muslim other than "al-Khawlani al-Shami", and no narration of his from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is known, nor is any narration of Ibn Jurayj from him known. In al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" the name appears as "Shurahbil bin Sa'd" (who is Madinan, a client of the Ansar), and he is known for narrating from Ibn 'Abbas, but he is da'if (weak). See al-Khatib's "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (2/ 165).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (8930), and via his route by al-Khatib in "Mudih al-Awham" (2/ 165-166), from Miqdam bin Dawud, from Asad bin Musa, from Sa'id bin Salim, from Ibn Jurayj, from Shurahbil bin Sa'd, from Ibn 'Abbas. He (al-Tabarani) said: No one narrated it from Ibn Jurayj except Sa'id bin Salim, and Asad bin Musa is alone in narrating it.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (3030) and "al-Saghir" (280), and by Abu al-Shaykh in "al-Tawbikh" (43), via the route of 'Abd al-Malik bin 'Amr Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi, from 'Abdullah bin Budayl, from al-Zuhri, from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah, from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), as marfu'.
Details of the narration: The wording is: "Do not cut one another off, do not turn your backs on one another, do not hate one another, and be, O servants of Allah, brothers; and it is not lawful for a Muslim to shun his brother for more than three days."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Tabarani said: No one narrated it from al-Zuhri, from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abdullah, from Ibn 'Abbas except "Ibn Budayl", and Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi is alone in it. We say: Ibn Budayl is da'if (weak); then al-Tabarani mentioned the preserved (mahfuz) versions narrated from al-Zuhri.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a marfu' narration from Hisham bin 'Amir in Musnad Ahmad (26/ 16257) and Ibn Hibban (5664): "It is not lawful for a Muslim to shun a Muslim for more than three nights. If they remain estranged for more than three, then both of them are turning away from the truth as long as they persist in their estrangement. Whichever of them is first to return, his being first to return is its expiation. If he greets him with salam and the other does not return it, while he had greeted him, the angels will return his greeting, and Satan will respond to the other. If they both die in their estrangement, they will never be united in Paradise."
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
