Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7448

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have committed a great many sins; is there any repentance for me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are your parents (or either of them) alive?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have a maternal aunt?" He said: Yes. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then be kind to her."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy, but the preponderant view is that this narration is "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Mu'awiyah - who is Muhammad bin Khazim - despite being trustworthy, has some errors (awham), and Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, who had a better memory than him, contradicted him and narrated it as "mursal"; and this is what Imam al-Tirmidhi preferred. "Abu Bakr bin Hafs" in the chain is "'Abdullah bin Hafs bin 'Umar bin Sa'd al-Waqqasi".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (8/ 4624), al-Tirmidhi (after number 1904) and Ibn Hibban (435) recorded it by way of Abu Mu'awiyah, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi also recorded it from Ibn Abi 'Umar, from Ibn 'Uyaynah, from Muhammad bin Suqah, from Abu Bakr bin Hafs, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as "mursal".
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi said: This is more correct than the hadith of Abu Mu'awiyah.
