Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7423

It is narrated from Abu Muslim al-Khawlani (may Allah have mercy on him) that he performed Hajj and came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She began asking him about Syria and its cold, and he kept telling her. Then she asked: How do the people there bear its cold? He said: O Mother of the Believers! They drink a drink called "tila'". She said: Allah has spoken the truth and my beloved (peace and blessings be upon him) conveyed (the truth); he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "Some people of my Ummah will drink wine and will call it by another name."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its marfu' part is "sahih li-ghayrihi", but this particular chain is "da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Dhahabi said in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" that the narrator Muhammad is "majhul" (unknown), and if he is Ibn Akhi al-Zuhri (the nephew of al-Zuhri), then the chain is "munqati'" (broken).
Note / Clarification: 'Amr bin al-Harith is Ibn Ya'qub al-Misri.
Reference / Source: This narration is in the "Muwatta'" of 'Abdullah bin Wahb (45) and in his "Jami'" (46 - Rif'at), and in it Ibrahim bin Nashit is paired with 'Amr bin al-Harith.
Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la recorded it (4390) from Harun bin Ma'ruf, and al-Bayhaqi 8/ 294-295 by way of Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin 'Abd al-Hakam; both of them from 'Abdullah bin Wahb, with this chain. Al-Bayhaqi also paired Ibrahim bin Nashit with 'Amr bin al-Harith.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Darimi recorded (2145) from Zayd bin Yahya, from Muhammad bin Rashid, from Abu Wahb al-Kala'i ('Ubaydullah bin 'Ubayd), from al-Qasim bin Muhammad (the son of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq), from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: The first thing to be overturned (Zayd said: meaning in Islam), as a vessel is overturned, is wine." It was said: "How, O Messenger of Allah, when Allah has made clear about it what He has made clear?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They will call it by a name other than its name and so make it lawful."
Grading: There is no harm in the narrators of this chain, but Zayd bin Yahya was contradicted by Shayban bin Farrukh.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Awa'il" (49) from 'Abdullah bin Ahmad, from Shayban, from Muhammad bin Rashid, from Sulayman bin Musa (al-Ashdaq), from al-Qasim, in the same way.
Grading: Whether it is this one or that one, both are "saduq" (truthful); and the narration of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid may tip the balance in favour of its being the hadith of "Sulayman al-Ashdaq".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim recorded it in "al-Awa'il" (64) and al-Tabarani in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (749) by way of 'Amr bin 'Uthman, and Ibn Bishran in "al-Amali" (218) by way of 'Abd al-Jabbar bin 'Asim; both of them from Baqiyyah bin al-Walid, from 'Utbah bin Abi Hakim, from Sulayman bin Musa al-Ashdaq, from al-Qasim, in the same way.
Reference / Source: Ishaq bin Rahawayh recorded it in his "Musnad" (923) from Waki', and Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" 6/ 25 by way of al-Muharibi ('Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad); both of them from Ja'far bin Burqan, from Furat bin Salman, from a man among the companions of al-Qasim bin Muhammad (an unnamed person), from al-Qasim.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (8/ 113), Ahmad bin Mani' in his "Musnad" (as in "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" 1/ 3771), Abu Ya'la (4731) and Ibn 'Adi (6/ 25) all recorded it by way of Waki', in the same way.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Al-Qasim" is dropped from the narration of Ibn Abi Shaybah and Ibn Mani', "the unnamed narrator" is dropped from the narration of Abu Ya'la, while both "the unnamed narrator" and "al-Qasim" are dropped from the narration of Ibn 'Adi.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The marfu' part is supported by the hadith of a man from the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Musnad Ahmad 29/ (18073), and its chain is "sahih". See the rest of its takhrij and its supporting reports there.
Important point: For the meaning of the word "al-tila'" (thickened grape juice or drink), see Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "Fath al-Bari" 17/ 274-279.
