Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7398

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade turning waterskins inside out (to drink directly from their mouths). After the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden it, a man got up at night to a waterskin and turned back its mouth to drink water, and a snake came out of it at him.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "al-Ghifari".

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak) because of the weakness of Zam'ah bin Salih.
Important point: However, the prohibition of drinking from waterskins after bending their mouths outward (ikhtinath al-asqiyah) is "sahih" in origin, as will come.
Note / Clarification: Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi is 'Abd al-Malik bin 'Amr al-Qaysi.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah narrated it in (3419) through the route of Muhammad bin Bashshar, from Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi ('Abd al-Malik bin 'Amr al-Qaysi), with this same chain.
Reference / Source: The prohibition of drinking from the mouth of the waterskin has passed earlier with the author in the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) at no. (7391).
Grading: The prohibition of drinking from waterskins with their mouths bent outward is established as "sahih" from the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: This narration is in Sahih al-Bukhari (5625) and Sahih Muslim (2023), and see its complete takhrij in "Musnad Ahmad" 17/ (11026).
Note / Clarification: See also the next narration.
General principle: The meaning of "ikhtinath al-asqiyah" is explained in al-Bukhari, in the hadith of Abu Sa'id, as: bending or breaking the mouths of waterskins or vessels outward and then drinking from them.
