Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is the weakness of 'Ali bin 'Asim (al-Wasiti), who alone mentions the word "al-kar'" (drinking water directly with the mouth, without a vessel or the hand); for this reason al-Dhahabi deemed it "wahi" (very weak) in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Adi narrated it in "al-Kamil fi Du'afa' al-Rijal" 5/ 193 and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (12502) through the route of Ahmad bin Sinan, from 'Ali bin 'Asim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (12253) and "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (1790) through the route of 'Abd al-Karim al-Jazari, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (drank) standing.
Grading: The original hadith about his (peace and blessings be upon him) drinking water standing is "sahih".
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated in (1637) and Muslim in (2027) through the route of 'Amir al-Sha'bi, from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: "I gave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) Zamzam to drink, and he drank it while standing." This narration is also in "Musnad Ahmad" 4/ (2183), and its complete takhrij is recorded there.
Note / Clarification: The narrator's word "kara'a" means: drinking water directly with the mouth, without using a vessel or the hands.
