It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The king of India sent the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a gift of a jar containing ginger (preserved or in pieces). He (peace and blessings be upon him) fed his Companions from it, a piece to each, and he gave me a piece as well.
Imam al-Hakim says: From the beginning of this book up to here, I had not narrated a single word from Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an al-Qurashi, and I did not know of any hadith other than this about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) eating ginger, so I have recorded it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In al-Hakim's text it is narrated as "the king of India", whereas the other hadith scholars who narrated this hadith have the words "the king of Rome (Byzantium)".
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak) because of the weakness of 'Amr bin Hakkam. Technical note / Defect ('illah): More than one scholar declared this hadith munkar, among them Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah (as in "al-'Ilal" 906). Ibn Hakkam is alone among the students of Shu'bah in narrating it, and he made it a hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him). The more correct view is that it is the narration of 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him); in either case the hadith revolves around Ibn Jud'an, who is weak and cannot be relied upon. Note / Clarification: Abu al-Mutawakkil is 'Ali bin Dawud al-Naji. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad 'Ali, p. 212), al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1233), Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (300), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (2416), Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" 5/ 137, al-Isma'ili in his "Mu'jam" 2/ 545 and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (162) through various routes from 'Amr bin Hakkam, with this same chain. Al-Tabarani says that no one narrated it from Shu'bah except 'Amr (bin Hakkam). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-'Uqayli (1234) also narrated it, where it is made clear that Ahmad bin 'Umayr al-Wadi had this hadith from both 'Amr bin Hakkam and al-Nadr bin Muhammad al-Jurashi, but because his house collapsed and his books were damaged, the hadith of 'Amr became mixed up for him with the hadith of al-Nadr. In reality this narration is known only from 'Amr (bin Hakkam), since both of them narrated from Shu'bah; so he narrated it from al-Nadr bin Muhammad. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Ibn Jud'an from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) was narrated by Ibn 'Adi (5/ 137) through the route of Sufyan bin Husayn. Ibn 'Adi says: I think this disagreement comes from 'Ali bin Zayd (bin Jud'an), because he may have mixed things up; in this way 'Amr bin Hakkam is freed from responsibility, but it still remains that he is alone in narrating it from Shu'bah.
(4085). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here the author (al-Hakim) made an oversight, because earlier, in hadith no. 4085, he has already declared a narration of Ibn Jud'an to be sahih.
Note / Clarification: The text between square brackets [ ] is taken from the Indian edition and is not in the manuscripts.
