Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7347

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: It has been forbidden to eat the food of two people who are competing with each other in outdoing one another in feeding people (for show and fame).
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Abu Dawud (3754) through the route of Jarir bin Hazim from al-Zubayr bin al-Khirrit, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Abu Dawud said after it that most of those who narrate it from Jarir do not mention Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in it. Harun al-Nahwi mentioned Ibn 'Abbas, while Hammad bin Zayd did not mention him. See further details there.
