Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7336

It is narrated from Umm Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with her), the sister of Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him), that she sent a cup of milk to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of his breaking the fast, and that was on a long day in intense heat. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent the messenger back to ask: "Where did you get this milk from?" She replied: It is from my own goat. He (peace and blessings be upon him) again sent the messenger: "Where did you get this goat from?" She said: I bought it with my own wealth. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) drank it. When the next day came, Umm Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I sent that milk to you out of compassion for your state because of the intense heat and the long day, but you sent the messenger back (to investigate)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is what the messengers were commanded: that they eat only what is pure and do righteous deeds."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: In our manuscripts "Umm 'Abd Allah bin Ukht Shaddad" is written, which is an error.

Note / Clarification: The text between the brackets was not in the manuscripts; it has been included with the help of the printed editions and the source works.

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak) because of Abu Bakr bin Abi Maryam.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Dhahabi, in "al-Talkhis", declared it defective (ma'lul) because of Ibn Abi Maryam, calling him "wahin" (very weak).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abi al-Dunya (116), 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad (Zawa'id al-Zuhd: 2357), al-Tabarani (Musnad al-Shamiyyin: 1488) and Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah: 6/105) through the route of al-Haytham bin Kharijah, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: In the printed edition of Kitab al-Zuhd the addition "haddathani abi" (my father narrated to me) has crept in, which makes it appear to be a narration of Imam Ahmad, whereas this is wrong.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nu'aym stated explicitly that these hadiths of Damrah (bin Habib) are "gharib" and that Ibn Abi Maryam is alone in transmitting them.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abi Khaythamah in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (3264, 3611) through the route of Muhammad bin Ja'far al-Warkani from al-Mu'afa bin 'Imran, in abridged form.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abi 'Asim, al-Tabarani (al-Kabir: 25/428) and Abu Nu'aym through the route of al-Walid bin Muslim, and by al-Tabarani (al-Shamiyyin: 1488) through the route of 'Isa bin Yunus; both narrate from Ibn Abi Maryam.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nu'aym had called it Ibn Abi Maryam's solitary narration in al-Hilyah, but in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" he also mentioned the route of 'Abd Allah bin Salih from Mu'awiyah bin Salih.
Note / Clarification: We did not find this route (the one via Mu'awiyah) so as to be able to judge its authenticity; furthermore, 'Abd Allah bin Salih (the scribe of al-Layth) is himself "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In place of this narration, the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) suffices, which is narrated as marfu' by Imam Muslim (1015) and other hadith scholars: "O people! Allah is Pure and accepts only what is pure, and Allah has commanded the believers with what He commanded the Messengers, for He said: {O Messengers, eat of the good things and do righteous deeds; indeed I am Knowing of what you do} and He said: {O you who believe, eat of the good things We have provided you}" (the hadith).
General principle: Lexical explanation: The statement of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), "marthiyatan laka", is for expressing grief and compassion; it is derived from "ratha lahu", meaning one's heart softening for someone and feeling pain for him. According to the author of "al-Nihayah" (root: r-th-y), Ibn al-Athir, it is one of the verbal-noun (masdar) patterns, like the patterns of "al-maghfirah" and "al-ma'dhirah".
