(2). It is narrated from Ibn Awn (may Allah have mercy on him) that he read, in the presence of al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him), the letter which Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) had written to his sons, and in it was written that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In dire necessity (a state of compulsion), a drink in the morning or in the evening (one meal's drink) suffices to keep one from resorting to carrion."

Grading: This narration is sahih as "mawquf" (as the statement of a Companion). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although all its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), Abu al-Muthanna (Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna al-'Anbari) contradicted narrators more trustworthy and more numerous than himself, who narrated it as mawquf. Ibn 'Awn refers to 'Abd Allah bin 'Awn al-Muzani. Reference / Source: It was recorded as "marfu'" by Tammam al-Razi in "al-Fawa'id" (128) through the route of Isma'il bin 'Ulayyah, and by Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" 1/94 through the route of an unnamed person. Grading: Both of these chains are weak. Reference / Source: It was recorded as "mawquf" from 'Abd Allah bin 'Awn by Abu Ishaq al-Fazari (357), Abu 'Ubayd (1/61), al-Bayhaqi (9/356) and al-Tabari (6/87). Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of another narration of al-Tabari are thiqah, but it is "mursal", because al-Hasan al-Basri transmits directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), even though Hushaym's hearing from al-Khasib and al-Khasib's hearing from al-Hasan are explicitly stated. General principle: Lexical explanation: Ibn al-Athir says that "al-darurah" (with an alif after the dad, al-daarurah) is originally a dialectal variant of the word "al-darurah" itself. General principle: "Al-ghabuq" refers to drinking in the evening, and "al-sabuh" to drinking in the morning.
