It is narrated from Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: My companion and I went to Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him). He placed bread and salt before us and said: Had the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not forbidden us from going to excessive trouble (takalluf), I would have gone to trouble (to prepare a better meal) for you. At that my companion said: If only there were some sa'tar (wild thyme) in this salt of ours. So he sent his water vessel to the grocer and pawned it, and brought sa'tar. When we had finished eating, my companion said: All praise is for Allah, who has made us content with what He has provided us. Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Had you truly been content with what you were provided, my water vessel would not be lying in pawn with the grocer!
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is "hasan" on the basis of the combination of all its routes. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This particular chain is soft (weak) because of Sulayman bin Qarm, but there is corroboration (mutaba'ah) for him. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9153) with the chain of Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim. Imam Ahmad in "al-Musnad" 39/(23733) narrated it through the route of Qays bin al-Rabi', from 'Uthman bin Shabur, from Shaqiq (or a narrator like him), that: a man came to Salman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he offered him whatever he had and said: "Had the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not forbidden us from going to great trouble for our companion, we would certainly have gone to great trouble for you". Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain Qays is weak and his shaykh 'Uthman is majhul (unknown). Note / Clarification: See also the narration that comes after it.
